Chanel Straw Boater Hat Brooch, Gilt Metal, Early Vintage

The boater that made Gabrielle Chanel’s name, cast in gilt metal at 5.3 cm and finished with its ribbon bow. A scarce early brooch and one of the house’s most narrative motifs.

The Piece

Chanel’s first shop sold hats, and the flat-crowned straw boater became her emblem long before the suit or the bag. The studio returned to it as a brooch: a plaited crown, a ridged brim and a ribbon tied at the side, all modelled in relief.

The back carries the house plate and a small hollow where the crown rises, and the pin is fitted with a safety catch.
