Aero Leather Buco J-107 Double Riders Jacket, Horween Front Quarter Horsehide, Black, Size 38, Talon Zips

A faithful Buco J-107 motorcycle jacket made by Aero Leather in Scotland, in heavy Horween front quarter horsehide with Talon zips and a corduroy lining, tailored afterwards to Aero’s slimmer STF pattern.

The Piece

The J-107 was made in the 1950s by the Joseph Buegeleisen Company of Detroit under the Buco name, and it is one of the most admired American motorcycle jackets of the period: a long-collared double rider with a belted waist, a characteristic pocket layout and a heavy horsehide shell. Original examples are now museum pieces, which is why the most exacting reproductions matter. Aero Leather of Galashiels, in the Scottish Borders, is among the most respected makers in the field and hand-cuts each jacket to order.

This jacket was ordered directly from Aero in March 2015 in Horween front quarter horsehide, a dense, glossy leather that creases boldly and ages towards a deep, uneven patina. It carries the Buco horse label, a hand-written Aero production tag marked Insurrection, and brass Talon zips throughout. The snap-down collar, epaulettes, half belt, zipped and slanted pockets and zipped cuffs follow the 1950s pattern, and the body is lined in black corduroy for winter. In February 2016 it was resized by Aero in Japan to the STF fit, slimming the shoulders, chest, upper arm, elbow and cuff while keeping the original body and sleeve lengths.

The result is a closer, more modern line that still has the weight and presence of a true horsehide jacket.

Worn only about five times, it is a rare chance at a custom Aero J-107 that has already been fitted and broken in.

Condition

• Pre-owned; worn about five times; graded AB.
• Light scuffs and small marks typical of horsehide, visible on close inspection.
• Faint resizing marks near the underarms from the 2016 Aero alteration.
• Talon zips work smoothly; corduroy lining clean.

The labels, materials, stitching, hardware and construction are examined together and documented in Japan before dispatch; anything that cannot be confirmed is stated plainly in the description.
