Louis Vuitton Ready-to-Wear: Jackets from the Jacobs, Jones, Abloh and Williams Years
Louis Vuitton did not make clothes until 1998, when Marc Jacobs showed the house's first ready-to-wear. Within a generation its jackets had become as recognisable as its canvas: the Monogram denim trucker, the varsity blouson with the house name across the back, the NIGO patchwork bomber, the kabuki biker made with Kansai Yamamoto. This guide reads that wardrobe by creative director, which is how collectors in Japan already file it.
The eras
Marc Jacobs, 1997–2013
Jacobs founded the clothing and gave it the house's first collaborations: Stephen Sprouse's graffiti in 2001, Takashi Murakami's Multicolore in 2003, and the Monogram denim of 2005, which turned the canvas into a cloth. Jackets from these years are womenswear and rare; the Monogram denim pieces, explained in our canvases and leathers guide, are the ones that surface.
Kim Jones, 2011–2018
Jones made the menswear a destination. His blousons took the Monogram into jacquard and bleached denim, his collaborations with Supreme (2017) and Fragment (2017) sold out on release, and his cuts were clean, slightly sporting and generous. The bleached Monogram jacquard jacket and the shearling-collared Monogram blouson belong here.
Virgil Abloh, 2018–2021
Abloh's three years changed what a Louis Vuitton jacket could be: varsity blousons with cartoon patches and the house name spelled across the chest, the mini varsity in orange and white, quilted varsities, the leather utility jacket with its field of pockets, the leather motorcycle jacket in yellow and black, and the NIGO capsules of 2020 and 2021 with their patchwork Damier denim. His pieces are the most collected of any era and the most reproduced, so the style reference and the Japanese provenance matter.
Pharrell Williams, from 2023
Williams brought the Damier back in pixelated and camouflage forms, the sailor and palm-print blousons, the spray denim jacket and a return to the varsity with embroidered patches. The pieces are new enough that Japanese owners are only now beginning to part with them, which makes them the most affordable way into the archive.
Nicolas Ghesquière's womenswear, from 2013
On the women's side Ghesquière's Cruise 2018 show at the Miho Museum, made with Kansai Yamamoto, produced the sequinned kabuki leather biker jacket, the single most sought-after Louis Vuitton jacket in Japan.
Reading the label
Every Louis Vuitton garment carries a white label with a style reference, usually three letters and two digits followed by a code for cloth and colour: HQA02WFRV, HRB75EMDM, HOL71EMJY. The first letters identify the line and category, the digits the model, and the suffix the fabric. The size follows in French numbers, 44 to 54 for men and 34 to 44 for women, and the country of manufacture, Italy or France. A reference that does not exist in the house's records, a missing suffix or a label sewn with the wrong thread are the first warnings. Our listings photograph the label for every jacket.
Sizing
Men's Louis Vuitton runs true to its French number: a 48 is a medium, a 50 a large. Abloh's varsities are cut boxy and short; Jones's blousons closer to the body; Williams's sailor and palm-print pieces fuller again. The women's biker is cut small, and a 36 is a true small. Measure a jacket you own and compare it with the flat measurements in each listing rather than trusting the number.
Condition
- Monogram denim and jacquard fade at the collar and cuffs; a strong, even colour means it was rarely worn.
- Varsity leather sleeves crease at the elbow and the rib stretches at the hem.
- Patches and embroidery lift at the corners; count them against the house's product photograph.
- Sequins on the kabuki biker are the first thing to check, row by row.
- Grades. Japanese grading describes all of this honestly; see Japanese condition ranks explained.
Why Japan
Japan has been Louis Vuitton's most devoted market for fifty years, and the Omotesando and Ginza boutiques sold Abloh's first collection to buyers who queued overnight and then wore the pieces twice. The house's clothing is kept here in garment bags with the tags on, which is why near-unused Abloh varsities and boxed NIGO pieces appear in Tokyo rather than Paris or New York. The whole Louis Vuitton story, from the trunks forward, is laid out in The Louis Vuitton Atlas.
