Gucci Blondie barrel shoulder bag in white diagonal-stitched leather with the round Interlocking G

Gucci's Modern Classics: Ophidia, GG Marmont, Blondie and Horsebit 1955

Most Gucci bags made in the last ten years belong to a handful of named lines. Each takes one emblem from the house archive and builds a family of shapes around it: shoulder bags, totes, belt bags, wallets and card cases. Knowing which line a piece belongs to tells you when it was designed, what it should be made of and how its price should sit against its neighbours.

GG Marmont: the antique double G

The GG Marmont arrived in 2016, early in Alessandro Michele's tenure as creative director. Its signature is a large double G clasp in a softly aged gold tone, set on leather quilted in a chevron pattern. The matelassé shoulder bag on a sliding chain became one of the defining bags of the decade, and the line soon spread to belt bags, camera bags, backpacks and a deep range of wallets.

  • What to check: the quilting should be crisp and symmetrical, with the chevrons meeting cleanly at the centre seam. The double G should sit straight and show even wear on its high points.
  • Variants worth knowing: velvet versions, including bags embroidered with a heart and the word "Loved", and small leather goods in bright grained leather.

Ophidia: Web stripe and the 1970s double G

Ophidia followed in 2018. The name reaches back to Greek mythology, where ophis is the serpent, and the line gathers three of Gucci's oldest codes in one design: GG monogram canvas, the green-red-green Web stripe taken from equestrian girth straps, and a flat double G plaque modelled on hardware of the 1970s. It is among the most traditional-looking of the modern lines, which is why it suits buyers who want a recognisably Gucci bag without fashion of the moment.

Ophidia was made mostly in GG Supreme canvas trimmed in brown leather, but the same shapes appear in suede, velvet and exotic skins, including python. Exotic Ophidia pieces are made in far smaller numbers and are worth seeking out.

Blondie: the round Interlocking G

The Blondie is built around a rounder, softer version of the Interlocking G, an emblem Gucci can trace to its own patent documents of 1971. The line returned to the runway at the Love Parade show in Los Angeles in November 2021 and was reworked again for Sabato De Sarno's Cruise 2025 collection, which added enamelled versions of the emblem that recall Gucci's jewellery of the 1970s.

Blondie bags tend to pair the emblem with leather stitched in fine diagonal lines. The family now runs from top-handle and shoulder bags to the small barrel bag (style 760170), compact wallets (760317) and card cases.

Horsebit 1955

The horsebit, a double ring joined by a bar, has been a Gucci code since the 1950s, when the house borrowed it from riding tack. Horsebit 1955 is a direct revival of a shoulder bag from the archive, reissued at the end of the 2010s. Most pieces use beige and ebony GG Supreme canvas with leather trim; wallets often pair the canvas with navy, as on the zip-around 621889 and compact 621887.

The other modern names

  • Dionysus (2015): named for the Greek god of wine, closed by a tiger-head bar.
  • Jackie 1961: the 1960s hobo associated with Jacqueline Kennedy, revived in 2020. Earlier Jackie bags are covered in our guide to vintage Gucci and its eras.
  • Bamboo: the 1947 handle that solved a shortage of leather after the war, and still appears on new bags.

Reading the label

Inside almost every modern Gucci bag or wallet is a small leather tab with two lines of numbers. The upper line is the style number, the same for every bag of that model: 760170 for the Blondie barrel bag, 517350 for the small Ophidia shoulder bag, 443496 for the velvet Marmont chain bag. The lower line is a production code. A style number that matches the model and the period of the design is one of the first things to confirm, and it is the most reliable way to search for comparable pieces.

Heat stamps read "GUCCI made in Italy" in a clean, evenly pressed sans serif. Hardware should feel heavy for its size, and zip pulls are usually engraved or embossed.

Buying modern Gucci pre-owned from Japan

Japan was one of Gucci's largest markets through the 2010s, and much of what was bought there is stored carefully, carried rarely and passed on in fine order. It is common to find Marmont wallets, Blondie bags and Ophidia pieces graded SA or A on the Japanese condition scale, often with dust bags and boxes. Look at the corners, the inside of the flap and the edges of the strap, which show wear first, and check that chain straps have no stiff links.

Care

Light leathers mark easily from denim and dark fabrics, so carry them with that in mind. Store bags lightly stuffed, out of the sun, in their dust bags. Keep velvet away from damp and brush it gently in one direction. Python should be stroked with the scales, never against them. Our page on caring for luxury leather covers the rest.
