Vintage Gucci: Bamboo, Horsebit and the Eras Between
Gucci began in Florence in 1921 as a maker of leather goods for travellers and riders, and the house's most enduring designs still carry that equestrian character. Vintage Gucci has returned to fashion several times, and Japan, where the house was hugely popular from the 1970s, holds a deep supply of older pieces.
The Bamboo bag, 1947
After the Second World War, leather and metal were scarce in Italy. Gucci's artisans turned to cane, heating and bending bamboo into handles. The result, first shown in 1947, became a signature. Check bamboo handles for splits, loose fixings and replaced sections; original handles have a warm, slightly irregular tone.
The Horsebit, 1953
The metal snaffle bit of a bridle first appeared on Gucci's loafer in 1953 and spread to bags and accessories. On bags, check that the bit is firmly fixed and the plating unworn.
The Jackie and the GG canvas
A slouchy shoulder bag introduced in the early 1960s was later renamed in honour of Jacqueline Kennedy, who carried it often. Around the same period the interlocking GG canvas, a woven or coated monogram fabric, became the house's travelling signature. The red and green web stripe, taken from saddle girths, completed the vocabulary.
Flora, 1966
The Flora print was created in 1966 for Grace Kelly, by then Princess of Monaco, as a silk scarf. It has since appeared on bags, shoes and clothing. Vintage Flora scarves are widely collected.
The modern eras
Tom Ford's period as creative director, from 1994 to 2004, brought sharp, sensual tailoring and reworked classics such as the Horsebit and Bamboo. Alessandro Michele, from 2015 to 2022, revived archive motifs with maximalist ornament. Pieces from both eras are now collected in their own right.
What to check on vintage Gucci
- Interior tag: most bags from the later twentieth century carry a leather tag stamped with a serial number in two rows. Its form helps date a piece.
- Canvas and leather: corners, handles and the base of GG canvas bags wear first.
- Linings: some older bags have linings that become sticky in humidity.
- Hardware: plating wear on clasps and bits.
