A reversible Gucci satin souvenir jacket carrying the full cast of Edo erotic and heroic imagery: oiran and geisha drawn from shunga, samurai, a phoenix, an eagle and a dragon. It reads as a house reinterpretation of the sukajan's oldest ambition, to wear Japan's picture world on the back.

The Piece

The sukajan began in postwar Yokosuka as an embroidered satin keepsake, often reversible, carrying dragons, eagles and tigers as emblems of place and bravado. Shunga, the erotic tradition within ukiyo-e, supplied Edo culture with some of its most refined figure drawing, and its courtesans (oiran) and geisha remain among Japan's most recognizable images.

This Gucci jacket brings both lineages together on reversible satin, with embroidery depicting shunga-inspired oiran and geisha, samurai, a phoenix, an eagle or hawk, and a dragon (ryu), with black embroidery noted in the design. Size 48.
