The Chanel Classic Flap: Sizes, Hardware and Serial Generations

Few objects in fashion are as instantly recognised as Chanel's quilted flap bag with its chain strap. It has been in production in one form or another since 1955, and in that time its sizes, leathers, hardware and identification have all changed. Japan bought these bags in great numbers through the 1980s and 1990s, and its pre-owned market remains one of the best places to find vintage examples in fine condition.

The 2.55 and the Classic Flap

Gabrielle Chanel introduced her quilted shoulder bag in February 1955, which gave it the name 2.55. It closed with a rectangular lock, now called the Mademoiselle lock, and hung from a chain so that the hands were free. In 1983 Karl Lagerfeld reworked the design with the interlocking CC turn-lock and a chain woven with leather. That version is known as the Classic Flap, and both remain in the collection today.

Sizes

  • Mini: a rectangular version of about 20 cm and a square version of about 17 cm.
  • Small: about 23 cm wide.
  • Medium or Large: about 25 cm, the best known.
  • Jumbo: about 30 cm.
  • Maxi: about 33 cm.

Vintage pieces sometimes differ slightly from current measurements, and single-flap vintage bags exist alongside the double-flap construction now standard. Measure rather than rely on names.

Leathers

Lambskin is soft and luminous, and shows scratches and corner wear readily. Caviar, a pebbled grained calfskin, is far more durable and holds its shape. Vintage bags also appear in patent, jersey, satin and exotic skins.

Hardware

Many bags made from the 1980s to around 2008 have hardware plated in 24-carat gold, with a rich, deep tone that collectors prize. Later bags use other finishes, including light gold, silver and ruthenium. On a vintage bag, check the turn-lock and chain for wear to the plating, and the leather woven through the chain for cracks.

Identification

From the mid-1980s until 2021, Chanel bags carried a serial sticker inside, and most came with a matching authenticity card. The number of digits and the sticker's design help to date a bag. Since 2021 Chanel has used an embedded microchip instead. Read Louis Vuitton and Chanel: Date Codes, Serials and Microchips for the detail.

What to check before buying

  • Corners and the base for wear, especially on lambskin.
  • The quilting: stitches should be even and the diamonds aligned across the flap and back.
  • The serial sticker and card, and whether the numbers match.
  • The interior for marks and the smell of storage.
  • The chain for stretched or cracked leather.

Questions collectors ask

Is a vintage 24-carat gold hardware bag better than a new one?

Many collectors think so. The deeper gold tone and the history appeal, and condition decides the rest.

Caviar or lambskin?

Caviar for everyday use; lambskin for its softness and glow, with more care.

Does a missing card reduce value?

Somewhat. The serial sticker inside matters more, and a matching card adds confidence.
