Japanese Zensho-ji–Style Amida Triad Altar Ensemble
This work is a Japanese Buddhist shrine ensemble (zushi) housing a Zensho-ji–style Amida triad (Zensho-ji shiki sanzon). The central figure represents Amida Nyorai, flanked by Kannon Bosatsu and Seishi Bosatsu, arranged before a unified mandorla in the distinctive iconographic format associated with Zenko-ji tradition.
The figures are carved in wood and finished with black lacquer and gilt details, then installed within a lacquered shrine cabinet. In Zensho-ji–style triads, the three figures share a single halo or mandorla surface, emphasizing salvific unity rather than hierarchical separation. This format traces its inspiration to the revered hidden main icon (hibutsu) of Zenko-ji in Nagano and became widely disseminated through Edo-period devotional replication.
The shrine cabinet is proportioned for domestic or temple-hall worship, with hinged doors and an interior gilded ground framing the triad. The construction allows the figures, base platform, and mandorla to be removed individually for maintenance, a feature consistent with Edo-period ritual practicality.
Condition issues are present. There is flaking and loss to lacquer surfaces, particularly on the upper left section of the shrine. Wear and patina consistent with age and handling are visible throughout. No major structural breaks are observed.
Although the precise date is unrecorded, stylistic and construction features support an Edo-period or later devotional production. This ensemble should be approached as a complete religious unit rather than as individual sculptures.
Overall condition is fair with surface losses. This work is suitable for study, devotion, or collection focused on Japanese Pure Land iconography and Zenko-ji tradition.
