A vast jacquard coat from the Autumn/Winter 2019 Y's runway, woven in a patchwork of purple, silver and black that looks almost like weathered stone, unworn with its tag still attached.
The Piece
Y's is the line Yohji Yamamoto founded before his Paris debut, and in recent seasons it has become a laboratory for textiles. For Autumn/Winter 2019 the collection was built around heavy jacquards with broken, painterly surfaces, shown on long hooded silhouettes; this coat appeared on the runway in a related colourway, and the opening photographs include that look for reference.
The cloth is a thick wool jacquard in which panels of violet, orchid, slate and black meet at irregular angles, each one flecked with white as if the colour had been rubbed away. Nothing about it is printed: the pattern is woven through, so it reads on both faces and keeps its depth in any light.
The cut is generous in the true Y's manner, with dropped shoulders, a wide shawl-like lapel and a length that falls well below the knee. Slits beneath the arms allow the wearer to bring the arms through at the side and let the sleeves hang, a playful detail that changes the coat from a robe to a cape in a moment.
It is fully lined in cupro and closes loosely at the front, so it can be thrown over knitwear or a hooded top just as it was styled on the runway. Rare to find, and rarer still unworn.
