A long, softly structured Yohji Yamamoto shoulder bag in black leather, its sides lined with domed jet studs and its front crossed by pyramid-stud bands and swags of gunmetal chain.
The Piece
Yohji Yamamoto's leather goods from the early 2000s carried a darker, more decorative streak than the clothes, drawing on punk and Victorian mourning jewellery in equal measure. This bag, attributed to that period, is a fine example: the Yamamoto label inside reads Fabriqué au Japon and Cuir/Leather, the earlier form of the house's leather label.
The body is a wide, barrel-like East-West shape in smooth black leather, about 41.5 cm across, 21 cm high and 11 cm deep. Each end is studded in two vertical rows of metal cups set with faceted black stones. On the front, two diagonal bands of square pyramid studs anchor several lengths of gunmetal chain that hang in loose loops across the bag and move as it is carried. Two long leather handles sit comfortably on the shoulder.
Inside, a grey canvas lining has a zip pocket and patch pockets, and the top closes with a toggle. Metal feet protect the base.
It is a bag that works as jewellery with an all-black outfit, and examples with complete chains are increasingly scarce.

Condition

- Leather supple with light creasing and some rubbing at the corners.
- Studs and chains present; hardware shows a softly aged patina.
- Interior lining shows marks and dust consistent with use.
- Base feet intact.
