Wide cotton trousers from the Spring/Summer 2021 Pour Homme collection, printed edge to edge with a brushed, camouflage-like painting in which a pair of watching eyes surfaces at the seat.
The Piece
Spring/Summer 2021 was shown in the uncertain months of 2020, and Yohji Yamamoto answered the moment with clothes that felt painted rather than printed. Faces, brushwork and smudged colour moved across shirts, coats and trousers, giving the season a sombre, gallery-like mood that collectors now seek out by its HD reference codes.
This pair, model HD-P21-007, is cut from a dense cotton printed in moss, slate, lilac and bone. The pattern reads at first as abstract camouflage; turn the trousers round and two large painted eyes emerge across the back, a quiet surprise that only shows itself as the wearer walks away.
The construction is pure Pour Homme. The leg is wide and straight, the front carries soft pleats, and buttoned panels run down the outer seams and finish at the hem, so the line can be left open or closed. Inside, the waistband is faced in a fine burgundy stripe, with a drawcord to fine-tune the fit.
Worn with a plain black shirt, the print does all the talking; under a long black coat it becomes a flash of painting at every step. It is a strong example of the post-2020 Pour Homme graphic language, and pieces from this collection rarely leave Japan.
