Yohji Yamamoto Pour Homme SS2018 Yuka Asakura Painting Print Cotton Jacket, Ivory and Plum, Size 2

From the spring/summer 2018 Pour Homme collection, a soft cotton two-button jacket printed edge to edge with the gestural paintings of Japanese artist Yuka Asakura, in ivory, plum, moss and rust.

The Piece

For spring/summer 2018 Yohji Yamamoto handed part of the Pour Homme collection to a painter. Works by the Japanese artist Yuka Asakura, loose, smeared and layered in a way that feels closer to a studio wall than a textile, were printed across tailoring and shirting, so that each garment carries a fragment of a canvas rather than a repeat pattern. The product code HW-J59-024 identifies this jacket within that season.

The cloth is a dry, slightly slubbed cotton, the ground an unbleached ivory over which drifts of aubergine, charcoal and bottle green collide with sudden flicks of vermilion and cobalt. Because the print follows the painting rather than the pattern pieces, the composition breaks and resumes across the lapels, pockets and back, which makes every example of this jacket visibly individual.

The cut is classic Yohji: a narrow notch lapel, two-button front, jetted pockets and a long, slightly relaxed body. Inside, a striped facing in cream and lilac shows at the opening. Size 2 sits at a true medium with a generous 56.5 cm chest; it wears beautifully open over a black T-shirt and wide trousers.

Artist collaborations sit at the heart of modern Yohji collecting, and the Asakura pieces are among the most recognisable of the late 2010s.
