Look 8 from the Autumn/Winter 2024 runway: a long raglan coat reversing from black technical shell to wool flannel, with a painted portrait of a woman spreading across the front.

The Piece

Autumn/Winter 2024 at Yohji Yamamoto Pour Homme returned again to painted portraits of women, the motif that has run through his menswear since the late 2010s. This coat appeared as Look 8, and its portrait, a pale-faced woman with dark fringe and violet shadows, her hand raised to her cheek, is painted with a loose, expressionist brush.

The coat is a generous raglan-sleeved model that falls to the ankle. One face is a black polyester shell with the portrait printed across the left front; the other is a 100% wool flannel, so it can be worn plain black when the mood calls for restraint. A tall collar in black cowhide buttons up against the neck, and the front closes with concealed and visible buttons.

The Yohji Yamamoto Pour Homme signature label is inside, size 1, made in Japan, with product code HO-C10-810.

Despite the size 1 tag, the cut is very full, with a chest of 64 cm flat, and it suits most frames that wear Pour Homme in 1 or 2. The raglan sleeve gives an easy, sloping shoulder that layers over a jacket without strain, and the leather collar can be worn turned up against the wind or folded flat. Reversed to the flannel side, it becomes a long, quiet black coat for days when the portrait should stay hidden.
