A scarlet wool long jacket with a stand collar and a single row of brass-tone buttons, worn in the Autumn/Winter 2001 Pour Homme collection, a rare flash of colour in a house built on black.

The Piece

Red is almost a statement of intent at Yohji Yamamoto. In a body of work dominated by black, the few seasons that used it did so with real force, and Autumn/Winter 2001 Pour Homme is one of them. This jacket, model HV-J31-187, is documented as a piece from that collection's runway presentation.

The cloth is a dense, felted wool in a deep scarlet, soft to the hand with a slightly brushed surface. A narrow stand collar rises from a clean neckline, and seven domed metal buttons run down the front in a straight line, the effect somewhere between a military frock coat and a priest's cassock.

The cut is long and quietly narrow at the body, with slanted hip pockets, a single back vent that opens the hem for walking, and sleeves finished with a plain turned cuff. The proportions are early 2000s Pour Homme at their most precise: nothing exaggerated, everything considered.

It works as outerwear over black tailoring, or as a jacket over a fine knit, and it photographs beautifully. Red Pour Homme from this era almost never comes back to the market, which makes this a genuine collector's piece.
