A black wool suit from the Yohji Yamamoto womenswear line: a long one-button jacket with sharp peak lapels, paired with straight trousers finished in deep turn-ups.
The Piece
The black suit is the foundation of Yohji Yamamoto's womenswear. Since the early 1980s he has cut tailoring for women with the same cloth and seriousness as men's, but with more length, more ease and a sense of the body moving inside the garment. This two-piece, jacket FZ-J21-123 and trousers FZ-P06-123, is a clear statement of that idea.
The jacket is long, reaching to the upper thigh, with wide peak lapels and a single button set low at the waist. The shoulders are soft and narrow, the body falls straight and the back is clean, so the line is long and vertical. It is lined in cupro for a smooth hand.
The trousers are cut from the same pure wool, straight in the leg with a pressed crease and a broad turn-up at the hem that adds weight and makes the fabric hang well. Together the pieces read as severe and elegant; apart, each works with knitwear and shirts throughout the year.
The season is not recorded on the labels, and the reference codes do not decode reliably, so we describe it simply as Yohji Yamamoto womenswear. A versatile, quietly powerful suit for anyone building a black wardrobe.
