Yakushi Nyorai Triad — Edo Period
This Edo-period wooden triad depicts Yakushi Nyorai, the Medicine Buddha, accompanied by his attendants Nikko Bosatsu and Gakko Bosatsu. Together, the three form a complete healing mandala, symbolizing restoration of body, mind, and spirit.
Yakushi Nyorai is revered throughout Japan as the Buddha who relieves illness and prolongs life. Unlike Pure Land Buddhas, Yakushi remains actively engaged in the human realm, answering prayers for recovery, protection, and balance. Nikko and Gakko Bosatsu embody sunlight and moonlight, reinforcing the idea of uninterrupted guardianship across day and night.
Carved in wood and finished with polychrome pigments and gilding, the figures display classical Edo-period proportions and devotional restraint. Each figure retains its own lotus base and aureole, indicating intentional creation as a unified triad rather than later assembly.
Age-consistent wear, pigment softening, and surface patina reflect authentic ritual use over generations. This triad would have served as a personal altar ensemble or temple-side devotional object rather than architectural display.
