Wire, enamel and gilt combine in this seated Shakyamuni of Chinese origin, a 32 cm figure in the Jingtai-lan tradition later revived under Qing taste. Blossoms in every color cover the robe, gilt warms the face and chest, and the fired surface glows with a glassy depth that paint can never match.

The Piece

A seated Shakyamuni Buddha rendered in vivid cloisonné enamel over copper, a jewel-toned devotional figure whose floral robe reads like a textile made of light. The face and chest are finished in warm gilt tones, while the body is wrapped in multicolored blossoms associated with the Chinese cloisonné (Jingtai-lan) tradition and later Qing-style revival aesthetics.

This is a cross-disciplinary object, part sacred image and part decorative arts masterpiece. Under natural light the enamel behaves differently from paint: it has depth, a glassy glow and subtle shifts where the wire partitions and enamel pools catch shadow.

Shakyamuni is the historical Buddha, the awakened teacher whose life and teachings form the foundation of Buddhism. In art he is often shown seated in calm authority, his hands forming gestures of reassurance, teaching or meditation.
