The Y-3 Gendo Pro Model in black leather: the adidas Pro Model basketball shoe given a central front zip and set on a sculpted platform sole hollowed out beneath the arch.
The Piece
Few Y-3 designs show the partnership's humour as clearly as the Gendo Pro Model. Introduced around 2023, it takes the adidas Pro Model, the high-top cousin of the Superstar with its rubber shell toe and three perforated stripes, and runs it through Yohji Yamamoto's studio. The laces are gone, replaced by a full-length zip down the centre of the vamp, and the shoe now sits on an exaggerated platform whose arch is cut clean through, like a sled runner.
This pair, article IG2934, is the all-black version: smooth black leather upper, tonal shell toe and stripes, a padded collar and a black sole with the herringbone pattern of the original underfoot and the Yohji signature along the sidewall.
Size 28 cm (around US 10), outsole length 32 cm, width 12.5 cm and height 18 cm. The platform adds height without the weight its look suggests.
The Gendo name and its sliced sole have made the shoe a fixture of Y-3's recent collections, and the all-black colourway is the one that suits the Yohji wardrobe best: worn under wide, cropped trousers, the platform reads as architecture rather than sportswear, and the zip gives the shoe a cleaner line than laces ever could.
Supplied with the original Y-3 box, it is one of the most recognisable Y-3 silhouettes of the decade.
