A vintage Yokosuka jumper worked in yokoburi, the traditional swing-arm machine embroidery in which the artisan guides each stitch by hand and eye, giving the shaded, painterly threadwork that defines the classic sukajan. Its tattoo-art design and honest wear make it a collector's piece with genuine character.
The Piece
Yokoburi embroidery is the technique behind the original postwar souvenir jackets of Yokosuka: rather than following a programmed pattern, the operator moves the fabric beneath a swinging needle, building each motif freehand. The method links this jacket to the craft that gave the sukajan its reputation, and its tattoo-art imagery places it in the yanki and yakuza-fashion wardrobe in which the souvenir jacket found a second life. Beyond being a collector's item, it is simply a very good vintage jacket.
