The Piece

Hydrangeas (ajisai) bloom through Japan's early-summer rains and have long been loved in gardens and temple grounds, while the swallow (tsubame) is welcomed as a bird of good fortune that returns each spring. Together they make a seasonal garden scene rendered in embroidery.

The sukajan, or Yokosuka jumper, began in postwar Japan as an embroidered satin souvenir jacket made for American servicemen stationed around the Yokosuka naval base, and has since become one of the defining hybrid garments of Japanese fashion.
