CURATORIAL OVERVIEW — WHAT THIS OBJECT ACTUALLY IS

This Takatoku-produced Tetsujin 28-go motorcycle tin toy belongs to a golden lineage of post-war Japanese character manufacturing, when manga and television heroes were rapidly translated into mechanical fantasies for children. Unlike the more common upright robot or walking tin toys, motorcycle variants were produced in significantly smaller quantities, due to higher tooling complexity and lower durability under play conditions.

The lithography here is unmistakably Showa-era: saturated cobalt blues, aggressive reds, and high-contrast mechanical detailing designed to convey speed and power. The rider’s rigid posture, exposed engine lines, and exaggerated wheel geometry reflect a transitional moment in Japanese toy design—halfway between pre-war tin craft and the coming age of die-cast realism.

Character: Tetsujin 28-go / Gigantor
Maker: Yokohama Toy (attributed)
Category: Tinplate motorcycle toy
Era: Showa period (vintage)
Material: Lithographed tinplate
Action: Static (collector display)
Condition: Heavily worn / as-found
– Paint loss, dents, oxidation
– No restoration; original surface intact

🧠 CONTEXT & WHY IT MATTERS

This is the opposite pole from the monumental metal sculpture and oversized sofubi you just ran—small, battered, authentic.

Tinplate Tetsujin pieces like this capture the first generation of robot fandom, when toys were thin-gauge metal, colors were bold, and play left permanent marks. The motorcycle motif adds motion mythology—speed, modernity, postwar optimism—wrapped around a robot icon that predates the mecha boom.

Collectors value examples like this because of the damage, not despite it. Wear confirms:

  • Period handling

  • Unrestored originality

  • Honest survival from mid-century play culture

This is a reference-grade artifact, even when (especially when) imperfect.

📐 DISPLAY NOTES

  • Works best in a grouped Showa vignette

  • Pair with paper ephemera, boxes, or modern reinterpretations

  • Do not over-clean—patina is the point
