Tailor Toyo Crimson Japanese Tour Jacket with Twin Dragons, Fifth Air Force Emblem and Hand-Embroidered Tokyo Japan Design
Description
A distinctive vintage Tailor Toyo Japanese souvenir jacket in deep crimson red, embroidered with twin dragons, swirling clouds and a bold Fifth Air Force-inspired emblem.
The back carries the jacket’s principal composition. White script reading “Tokyo Japan” arches above a circular blue, white and gold insignia centered with a large numeral 5. Two golden dragons curl outward from behind the emblem, surrounded by pale blue, white and gold cloud forms.
Matching dragons appear vertically across both sides of the chest, giving the front a balanced military-tour-jacket appearance without overwhelming the clean red body.
Unlike a conventional rib-knit sukajan, this jacket has a pointed shirt-style collar, straight cuffs and a lightly gathered waistband. The result sits somewhere between an embroidered Japanese souvenir jacket, a vintage military tour jacket and a casual Harrington-style bomber.
The lustrous red exterior is paired with a pale champagne satin lining, allowing the embroidery to remain the clear visual centerpiece.
Design Character
The jacket’s strongest quality is its vivid simplicity.
Rather than covering the entire garment with embroidery, the design concentrates its energy across the chest and upper back. The crimson ground gives the dragons and Fifth Air Force emblem enormous clarity, while the pale blue cloud embroidery introduces a cool contrast.
The pointed collar also changes the personality of the piece. It feels less like a modern streetwear bomber and more like a vintage serviceman’s embroidered tour jacket, with the clean, direct visual language associated with postwar souvenir clothing.
Identification and Subject
Label: Tailor / Hand Embroidery
Garment type: Japanese embroidered souvenir or military tour jacket
Marked size: M
Subject: Tokyo, Japan, twin dragons and Fifth Air Force-style insignia

The large numeral 5 and blue-and-white military-style roundel strongly evoke the visual identity of the United States Fifth Air Force, which has a long historical association with operations in Japan and the Pacific.
Iconography and Meaning
The dragon is one of the defining motifs of Japanese souvenir-jacket design.
It represents strength, authority, transformation and protective energy. On this jacket, the two dragons flank the central emblem, giving the composition the symmetry and ceremonial force of a military crest.
The embroidered clouds place the dragons in a supernatural realm and create movement around the otherwise compact back design.
The words “Tokyo Japan” establish the garment as a location-specific souvenir piece, while the Fifth Air Force-inspired emblem connects it visually to the military-tour-jacket tradition that helped shape the development of postwar Japanese embroidered outerwear.
Style, Materials and Construction
Vintage zip-front souvenir-jacket construction featuring:
- Crimson red satin-finish outer fabric
- Pale champagne satin lining
- Twin embroidered dragons across the chest
- Large dragon and military-emblem back composition
- “Tokyo Japan” script embroidery
- Swirling cloud motifs
- Pointed fold-down collar
- Full metal zipper
- Two slanted front pockets
- Buttoned straight cuffs
- Lightly gathered waistband
- Hand-embroidery-style label
- Marked Japanese size M
The exact fiber composition is not confirmed by the supplied photographs. The shell and lining have the sheen and drape associated with rayon or synthetic satin commonly used in Japanese souvenir outerwear.
Period Assessment
This jacket appears consistent with a later vintage Japanese souvenir or military-tour-jacket reproduction, likely dating approximately from the 1980s through the 1990s.
Its embroidered military theme recalls earlier postwar tour jackets, while the uniform machine stitching, synthetic satin, modern zipper construction and garment finishing indicate a later vintage production rather than a confirmed original occupation-era piece.
The label and design place it within the broader tradition of Japanese manufacturers recreating and reinterpreting historic souvenir-jacket motifs. Tailor Toyo remains one of the best-known Japanese labels associated with historically inspired souvenir jackets, although this garment’s exact maker attribution should remain limited to the visible Tailor / Hand Embroidery label.
Condition
Good vintage pre-owned condition with visible signs of age, handling and previous wear.
The red body retains a strong, rich color, while the dragon, cloud and emblem embroidery remains bright and clearly defined.
Visible characteristics include:
- Natural creasing and wrinkling throughout the shell and lining
- Light surface rubbing and uneven sheen
- Minor scattered marks consistent with vintage use
- Small thread irregularities around portions of the embroidery
- Mild wear around the collar, cuffs, pocket edges and zipper
- General softness and patina from previous wear and storage
- Light discoloration or tonal variation to portions of the pale lining
No major structural tear is apparent in the supplied photographs. Please inspect every image carefully, as the photographs form an essential part of the condition description.
Dimensions
Measurements were taken flat and are approximate.
A. Body length: 60 cm / 23.6 in
B. Chest width, armpit to armpit: 60 cm / 23.6 in
C. Sleeve length from collar: 85 cm / 33.5 in
D. Underarm sleeve length: 55 cm / 21.7 in
E. Relaxed hem width: 57 cm / 22.4 in
Although marked Japanese size M, the approximately 60 cm flat chest is relatively generous. The jacket may accommodate approximately a modern Western M to L depending on shoulder shape, layering and preferred fit.
Please compare these measurements with a similar jacket that fits comfortably rather than relying solely on the marked size.
Display and Collecting Appeal
This jacket is especially well suited to collectors of:
- Japanese military tour jackets

- Fifth Air Force memorabilia
- Tokyo Japan embroidery
- Dragon jackets
- Japanese Americana
- 1980s and 1990s Japanese fashion
- Vintage embroidered outerwear

The vivid crimson body gives it immediate display presence, while the shirt collar and clean front keep it surprisingly wearable.
The back operates almost like an embroidered squadron banner, with two dragons circling a bold military emblem beneath the words Tokyo Japan. 🐉✈️
