Rare Reversible Japanese Souvenir Jacket with Yokozuna Sumo Embroidery, Black Velour, Blue-Gold Satin, Dragon, Tiger, Eagle, Mount Fuji, and Rising Sun

A striking vintage Switch Embroidered Garments sukajan offering two dramatically different Japanese souvenir-jacket compositions in one collectible garment.

The principal side is rendered in softly aged black velour with an embroidered Yokozuna sumo wrestler, Mount Fuji, rising sun, ocean waves, and Japanese 横綱 lettering. Reverse the jacket to reveal a vivid royal-blue and golden-yellow quilted satin side decorated with a tiger, eagle, and a large dragon twisting through stylized clouds and waves.

This is a true double-faced statement jacket. One side feels restrained, traditional, and museum-like; the other erupts into saturated pop color and classic rockabilly sukajan energy.

Black Velour Yokozuna Side

The darker face presents a large embroidered sumo composition across the back.

A powerful rikishi stands beneath the scripted word “Yokozuna,” framed by a red rising sun, snow-capped Mount Fuji, pale clouds, and curling ocean waves. His ceremonial apron carries the Japanese characters 横綱, reinforcing the championship sumo theme.

The embroidery is executed primarily in ivory, cream, gold, red, pale blue, and muted pink, allowing the figure to emerge clearly against the deep black velour ground.

The front is comparatively restrained, featuring mirrored ceremonial sumo emblems embroidered with 横綱 characters and long golden cords. This creates a balanced façade while reserving the main narrative for the back.

Cream-colored rib-knit trim at the collar, cuffs, and waistband gives this side a classic mid-century souvenir-jacket character.

Blue and Gold Dragon Side

The reverse transforms the jacket completely.

The body becomes royal blue with brilliant golden-yellow sleeves, quilted diamond stitching, contrasting sleeve stripes, and striped rib-knit trim.

The chest carries two classic sukajan emblems:

  • A roaring tiger head
  • A descending eagle with spread wings

Across the back, an elaborate dragon coils through foaming waves and stylized clouds beneath embroidered Japan script.

The blue, gold, cream, brown, and white embroidery creates a bold collegiate-meets-Japonisme color palette with unmistakable vintage streetwear appeal.

Symbolism and Visual Language

The jacket combines several of the most recognizable subjects associated with Japanese embroidered souvenir clothing.

The sumo wrestler creates an unmistakably Japanese sporting and cultural identity. Mount Fuji, the rising sun, and ocean waves establish a landscape of national imagery around the figure.

The reverse draws from a more traditional sukajan bestiary:

  • Dragon: authority, transformation, and dynamic energy
  • Tiger: courage, physical strength, and vigilance
  • Eagle: power, vision, and freedom
  • Waves and clouds: movement, endurance, and the forces of nature

Together, the two sides form an embroidered anthology of Japanese popular iconography.

Construction and Materials

The jacket features:

  • Fully reversible construction
  • Black velour-like fabric on the Yokozuna side
  • Royal-blue and golden-yellow satin-like reverse
  • Quilted diamond stitching on the blue side
  • Dense multicolor machine embroidery
  • Raglan-style sleeves
  • Reversible central metal zipper
  • Hand-warmer pockets on both faces
  • Rib-knit collar, cuffs, and waistband
  • Contrasting sleeve stripes and piping
  • Short Japanese souvenir-bomber silhouette

The softly structured body and gathered ribbing create the rounded profile traditionally associated with vintage sukajan jackets.

Period Assessment

The materials, label design, embroidery style, reversible construction, and strongly saturated color blocking appear consistent with Japanese sukajan production from the late twentieth century or early revival era.

Its combination of black velour, quilted satin, heritage motifs, and exuberant pop coloring gives it an authentic vintage character that newer reproductions often attempt to recreate.

Condition

Vintage pre-owned condition with visible age-related character.

The black velour side shows surface dust, lint, softened pile, tonal variation, rubbing, and general signs of previous wear. The satin reverse displays natural wrinkling, light surface marks, and areas of softened sheen.

The cream and striped rib-knit sections show age, discoloration, stretching, and wear appropriate to a vintage jacket. Minor loose fibers or thread irregularities may be present around embroidered areas.

The embroidery remains bold and visually impressive, with the central Yokozuna, dragon, tiger, and eagle compositions retaining strong color and definition.

Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an essential part of the condition description. This garment is offered in its authentic vintage state rather than restored to look new.

Size and Fit

Tagged size: Free size
Estimated modern fit: Approximately unisex S to M

The jacket has the compact, slightly cropped silhouette commonly associated with Japanese sukajan garments.

It may suit:

  • A fitted men’s S
  • A compact men’s M
  • A relaxed women’s M
  • An oversized women’s S
  • Smaller-framed unisex styling

Fit preferences vary, particularly with vintage Japanese outerwear, so the free-size designation should be treated as an approximate guide.

Why This Jacket Stands Out

This is an especially memorable sukajan because each side possesses a completely independent identity.

The black face offers a rare sumo-centered design with Yokozuna lettering, Mount Fuji, and rising-sun imagery. The blue-and-gold reverse delivers the more familiar dragon, tiger, and eagle vocabulary of classic Japanese souvenir jackets.

Its appeal includes:

  • Rare Yokozuna sumo wrestler subject
  • Visible Switch Embroidered Garments label
  • Two fully developed reversible designs
  • Velour and quilted satin construction
  • Eight major Japanese motifs across one garment
  • Distinctive blue-and-yellow pop colorway
  • Authentic vintage patina
  • Strong collector and display presence

It is equally compelling as wearable streetwear, rockabilly fashion, a sukajan collection centerpiece, or embroidered Japanese textile art.

Styling and Display

Wear the black side with dark denim, military trousers, boots, or monochrome layers for a subdued vintage look.

Reverse it to the blue-and-gold side for maximum color with jeans, workwear, varsity-inspired pieces, or Japanese Americana styling.

When not worn, the jacket can be displayed on a broad padded hanger with either the Yokozuna or dragon composition facing outward. Reversing it periodically creates the effect of rotating between two completely different collectible garments.

Shipping and Store Policies
