Moonlit Geese and Rose-Pink Swallows Across Two Fully Embroidered Faces

A beautifully aged reversible Japanese sukajan jacket pairing two poetic bird compositions within a dramatic black, ivory and dusty-pink palette.

One face presents wild geese crossing a pale moon against a deep black satin body, with additional birds, flowing cloud lines and bold racing stripes extending along the ivory sleeves. Reverse the jacket to reveal an ivory jacquard face embroidered with flocks of rose-toned swallows sweeping across the front and back.

The jacket carries pronounced vintage patina, creating the atmosphere of a well-traveled Japanese textile rather than a pristine contemporary reproduction.

Two Reversible Bird Landscapes

Black Moonlit Goose Side

The darker face is anchored by a luminous embroidered moon with two birds flying across its surface. Additional wild geese move across the chest and sleeves, surrounded by stylized cloud and wind lines.

The black body creates a strong contrast against the cream sleeves, while the parallel black-and-ivory racing stripes give the jacket a sharper athletic silhouette.

The reverse back expands the composition into a moonlit migration scene, with birds gliding beneath the pale disc and through long horizontal cloud formations.

Ivory Swallow Side

The lighter face is constructed from patterned ivory jacquard satin with black raglan sleeves and matching striped trim.

Rose, burgundy, peach and black swallows travel diagonally across the body in two animated flocks. Their pointed wings and forked tails create a sense of movement, freedom and seasonal passage.

The embroidery continues across the back, transforming the jacket into a broad airborne composition rather than a single centered emblem.

Symbolism and Meaning

Migratory birds have long represented movement, loyalty, seasonal return and the passage between distant places.

The geese on the black face evoke autumn skies, moonlit travel and quiet endurance. Their formation suggests companionship and collective direction.

The swallows on the ivory face bring a brighter energy. Swallows are traditionally associated with spring, safe return, good fortune and renewed beginnings.

Together, the two sides form a complete seasonal story: dark moonlit migration on one face and the lively return of birds on the other.

Materials and Construction

The jacket appears to be made from lustrous satin-finish and jacquard-woven synthetic textiles with dense machine embroidery.

Construction details include:

  • Fully reversible design
  • Embroidery across both fronts and backs
  • Additional sleeve embroidery
  • Jacquard-woven ivory fabric
  • Raglan-style shoulders
  • Decorative sleeve stripes
  • Rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband
  • Slanted welt pockets
  • Metal zipper closure
  • Lightweight Japanese bomber silhouette

Period and Style

The design and construction appear consistent with Japanese sukajan and decorative wagara fashion from the late Shōwa to Heisei period.

This piece belongs to the fashion-led tradition of Japanese souvenir jackets, translating classic seasonal bird imagery into a reversible streetwear form.

Its extensive sleeve work, two complete embroidered faces and restrained monochrome palette give it a particularly distinctive collector presence.

Condition

Vintage pre-owned condition with substantial visible age-related wear and patina.

The pale areas show noticeable discoloration, staining, yellowing, mottling and uneven toning. The strongest marks are visible across the ivory sleeves, body panels, cuffs and lower sections.

Additional characteristics include:

  • General wrinkling and handling wear
  • Fading and surface variation
  • Discoloration to rib-knit trim
  • Natural irregularity across the jacquard fabric
  • Wear around the zipper, seams and pocket areas
  • Age-related marks consistent with long-term use and storage

The embroidery remains visually strong and continues to define both reversible compositions.

Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an essential part of the condition description.

Size and Fit

Manufacturer’s Size: M

Vintage Japanese sizing typically runs smaller than contemporary Western sizing. This jacket may best suit a modern XS-S or a slim unisex S, depending on body shape, layering and preferred silhouette.

Comparing the garment with a similar jacket that already fits comfortably is recommended before purchase.

Styling and Display

The black side offers a dramatic monochrome look suited to denim, tailored trousers, boots and minimalist Japanese streetwear.

The ivory swallow side has a softer, more romantic character that pairs beautifully with faded jeans, neutral knitwear, wide-leg trousers or layered vintage styling.

It would also make an evocative display piece for a collector of:

  • Vintage Japanese sukajan
  • Bird-themed textile art
  • Japanese embroidered jackets
  • Wagara fashion
  • Reversible souvenir bombers
  • Moon and migration imagery
  • Distressed vintage clothing

  • Embellished sleeves on both faces
