Romantic Japanese Bird Embroidery in Blush Pink, Champagne Gold and Ivory Jacquard Satin
A beautifully aged reversible Japanese sukajan jacket embroidered with sweeping flocks of birds across two richly patterned faces.
One side glows in champagne gold and antique ivory, filled with rose-toned swallows darting across the chest and back. Reverse the jacket to reveal a softer blush-pink composition with embroidered wild geese or migratory waterbirds gliding through stylized clouds and moonlit air.
The palette is unusually delicate for a souvenir jacket. Rather than relying on dragons, tigers or military imagery, this piece creates its impact through movement, softness and the poetry of birds in flight.
A Jacket of Two Skies
The champagne-and-ivory face presents an energetic flock of swallows crossing the body in two sweeping formations.
Their pointed wings, forked tails and directional arrangement give the embroidery a lively sense of migration. Burgundy, dusty rose, pale peach and black threads contrast beautifully against the woven ivory ground.
The reverse side changes the mood completely. A faded blush-pink body is framed with pale sage sleeves and embroidered with long-necked birds that appear consistent with wild geese or ducks. Stylized cloud and water lines drift along the sleeves and back, while a pale circular moon anchors the composition.
Together, the two faces feel like changing seasons: warm autumn gold on one side, misty spring pink on the other.

Bird Motifs and Visual Meaning
The embroidery is built around rhythm rather than symmetry.
On the gold face, the birds cut diagonally across the jacket, suggesting speed, freedom and coordinated movement. Their repeated silhouettes form a visual current that continues from the chest onto the back.
On the pink face, the birds are more widely spaced and appear to float through a quieter landscape of moonlight and drifting cloud lines. The arrangement gives this side an almost painted quality, recalling seasonal Japanese screens and textile compositions.
The result is a reversible jacket with two distinct personalities:
- Warm, spirited and luminous in champagne gold
- Soft, nostalgic and atmospheric in faded pink
Fabric and Construction
The jacket is constructed from lustrous satin-finish jacquard fabric with a woven scenic pattern visible beneath the embroidery.
Notable details include:
- Fully reversible construction
- Elaborate embroidery on both faces
- Jacquard-woven satin body and sleeves
- Raglan-style shoulder construction
- Decorative parallel sleeve stripes
- Rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband
- Slanted welt pockets
- Metal front zipper
- Soft, lightweight bomber silhouette
The woven backgrounds add depth even where embroidery is absent, allowing the surface to shimmer differently as the jacket moves.
Period and Style Assessment
The construction, pastel palette and decorative embroidery appear consistent with Japanese sukajan and wagara fashion produced during the late Shōwa to Heisei period.
This is best understood as a vintage Japanese fashion interpretation of the classic souvenir jacket rather than an early postwar military souvenir piece.
Its romantic color scheme and extensive bird embroidery make it particularly appealing within the more decorative, fashion-led branch of sukajan collecting.
Condition
Vintage pre-owned condition with pronounced age-related character.
The pale satin and brocade surfaces display visible discoloration, mottling, staining, fading and uneven toning throughout. These effects are especially noticeable across the ivory, gold, blush and pale green areas.
Additional signs of age include:
- General wrinkling and handling wear
- Patina around the body and sleeve panels
- Fading and discoloration to the rib-knit trim
- Natural variation across the woven satin
- Wear consistent with long-term use and storage
The embroidery remains visually expressive and retains strong decorative presence on both faces.
Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an essential part of the condition description. This jacket is offered with its existing wear, patina and imperfections intact.
Size and Fit
Manufacturer’s Size: M
Vintage Japanese sizing generally runs smaller than contemporary Western sizing. This piece may suit a modern Western XS-S or a slim unisex S, depending on shoulder width, chest measurement, layering and preferred silhouette.
For the best fit, compare the garment with a similar jacket that already fits comfortably.
Styling and Display
The champagne-gold face works beautifully with cream trousers, faded denim, linen, neutral knitwear and understated vintage accessories.
The blush-pink face offers a softer look that pairs well with washed jeans, long skirts, wide-leg trousers or contemporary Japanese streetwear.
It would also make a distinctive display piece for a collector of:
- Vintage sukajan jackets
- Japanese embroidered clothing
- Bird-themed textile art
- Wagara fashion
- Pastel Japanese streetwear
- Reversible souvenir jackets
Why Collect This Piece?
This jacket stands apart from more familiar dragon-and-tiger sukajan through its unusual bird imagery and delicate palette.
Its strongest collector qualities include:
- Two fully developed reversible designs
- Extensive embroidery across the front, back and sleeves
- Swallow and migratory bird motifs
- Jacquard-woven satin backgrounds
- Rare pastel champagne, blush and sage color architecture
- Naturally developed vintage patina
- Wearable size M
- Strong decorative and display appeal
It is a poetic, visibly aged piece with the atmosphere of a discovered textile treasure rather than a pristine modern reproduction.
