Reversible Japanese Satin Jacket with Monumental Butterflies, Chrysanthemums and Pink Brocade Landscape
A richly detailed reversible sukajan that trades the traditional tiger-and-dragon vocabulary for something softer, more elegant and wonderfully theatrical.
One side presents a deep black satin ground covered with oversized chōchō butterflies, cascading chrysanthemums and curling floral vines. The butterflies appear in layers of red, violet, lavender, pink, blue and silver, while olive-gold sleeves and ornate woven shoulder bands frame the composition.
Turn the jacket inside out and the mood changes completely. The reverse reveals a refined blush-pink and ivory jacquard surface woven with delicate landscapes, trees, traditional architecture and distant scenery. It feels almost like stepping through the lining of an antique kimono into a quiet painted garden.
A Distinctive Reversible Design
This jacket offers two genuinely different personalities rather than a decorative side and a plain lining.
The black side is bold, graphic and embroidery-led, with large butterflies and chrysanthemums flowing across both the front and back. The reverse is understated and textural, using tonal pink and champagne jacquard for a softer, more elegant appearance.
Its combination of exuberant embroidery, kimono-inspired brocade and a compact bomber silhouette makes it especially appealing for collectors drawn to feminine wagara, Japanese textile design and unconventional sukajan compositions.

Butterfly and Chrysanthemum Imagery
The butterfly is known in Japanese as chō or chōchō, making it both the visual heart of the jacket and the natural keyword for this design.
Butterfly imagery has long appeared across Japanese robes and decorative arts. Its associations include beauty, transformation and enduring partnership, while the chrysanthemum traditionally carries connections with longevity, good fortune, refinement and the autumn season.
Together, the motifs create a composition that feels graceful without becoming delicate. The large scale of the embroidery gives the jacket genuine visual authority, especially across the black satin side.
Embroidery and Textile Construction
The primary side is built around dense multicolored machine embroidery with raised satin stitching, outlined petals and layered butterfly wings. Fine pale cords sweep through the composition like wind trails, visually connecting the butterflies across the garment.
The reverse uses a tonal woven jacquard rather than a flat synthetic lining. Its pink central panels and champagne sleeves contain subtle scenes of trees, architecture and landscape, allowing the imagery to emerge differently as the fabric catches the light.
Decorative shoulder bands add another layer of woven pattern and create an almost kimono-trimmed appearance along the sleeves.
Period and Style
The construction, reversible format, decorative intensity and romantic Y2K palette appear consistent with Japanese sukajan produced during the late 1990s through the 2000s.
Unlike military-inspired souvenir jackets, this example leans toward fashion-oriented wagara and kimono revival styling. Its compact bomber proportions and elaborate all-over decoration make it equally suitable for Japanese streetwear, maximalist vintage styling and textile-focused collections.
Condition
Very good vintage condition with natural signs of previous wear.
The satin and brocade retain their sheen, while the embroidered butterfly and chrysanthemum designs remain vivid and visually strong. Light creasing, gentle handling wear and minor age-related surface variation may be present throughout.
No major tears, extensive embroidery loss or large areas of visible damage are apparent in the photographs. Please examine all images closely, as they form an important part of the condition description.
Size and Fit
Tagged Size: M
Japanese vintage sizing often fits more compactly than contemporary Western sizing. This piece may be best suited to a modern Western Small to Medium depending on body shape, layering and preferred silhouette.
The ribbed waistband creates the characteristic slightly cropped sukajan profile, while the raglan construction allows comfortable movement through the shoulders.
Styling and Display
Wear the black side with monochrome trousers, boots or a simple dress when the embroidery deserves the full spotlight.
The pink jacquard side works beautifully with cream, burgundy, charcoal or muted green, offering a quieter alternative without losing the garment’s Japanese textile character.
Displayed open on a wall or garment stand, the jacket also becomes a reversible textile artwork, with one side reading as an embroidered flower garden and the other as a softly woven landscape.
