Classic Japanese Souvenir Jacket with Soaring Eagle, Matsu Pine and Bold Two-Tone Satin Construction

A striking vintage sukajan centered on one of the genre’s most enduring images: a powerful eagle descending through evergreen pine branches beneath the embroidered word “Nippon.”

The deep midnight-navy body, vivid crimson sleeves and oversized cream-and-gold eagle create a bold old-school Yokosuka silhouette. Unlike densely crowded modern designs, this jacket gives its central artwork room to breathe, allowing the sweeping wings, hooked talons and sculptural pine branches to command the entire back.

Design and Embroidery

Eagle and Nippon Back Artwork

The back features a large embroidered eagle with its wings fully extended and talons reaching downward. Above the bird appears “Nippon,” the Japanese name for Japan, rendered in flowing gold script.

Cream, beige, brown and gold threads give the feathers dimensional shading, while the sharply defined eye and open beak add movement and intensity.

Matsu Pine Motif

Stylized pine branches frame the eagle across the back and continue symmetrically over the chest.

In Japanese decorative arts, pine or matsu is traditionally associated with endurance, longevity and steadfast character. Its evergreen foliage creates a fitting counterpart to the eagle’s strength and vigilance.

Color and Construction

  • Midnight-navy satin-finish body
  • Crimson-red raglan sleeves
  • Large multicolored eagle embroidery
  • Pine-tree embroidery across the front and back
  • Gold “Nippon” lettering
  • Decorative twisted piping along the raglan seams
  • Metal front zipper
  • Angled front pockets
  • Striped rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband
  • Lightweight bomber-style construction
  • Classic Yokosuka souvenir-jacket silhouette

The red and navy color architecture gives the jacket strong visual impact while remaining easy to style with denim, workwear, military trousers or monochrome streetwear.

Period Assessment

The satin construction, color blocking, embroidery style and ribbed bomber profile appear consistent with a late-20th-century vintage Japanese sukajan.

This piece preserves the visual language of traditional souvenir jackets while presenting it in a wearable, generously proportioned medium size.

Condition

Pre-owned vintage condition with visible age-appropriate wear.

The satin surface shows natural creasing, tonal variation, minor marks and areas of softened sheen. The striped ribbing displays mellowing and light discoloration consistent with age and previous use. The metal zipper and trim retain authentic vintage character.

The principal eagle and pine embroidery remains visually strong, with clear detail and excellent display presence.

Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description. Vintage garments are not factory-new and may retain subtle evidence of age, storage and previous ownership.

Collector and Styling Appeal

This jacket offers a particularly clean interpretation of classic sukajan iconography.

Its appeal includes:

  • Monumental eagle back embroidery
  • Traditional Japanese pine symbolism
  • Highly legible “Nippon” lettering
  • Strong navy and crimson palette
  • Symmetrical embroidered chest design
  • Authentic vintage surface character
  • Easy-to-wear medium sizing
  • Japanese streetwear, Amekaji and rockabilly crossover appeal

A compelling choice for sukajan collectors, embroidered-jacket enthusiasts and anyone seeking a bold vintage layer without an overly crowded composition.
