Japanese Kabukimono Streetwear with Gold Calligraphy, Skull Art, Sakura and Reversible Red Satin Face
COLLECTOR’S OVERVIEW
A dramatic reversible sukajan by Miyabi Musubi, combining lustrous Japanese souvenir-jacket styling with bold kanji calligraphy, warrior imagery, skull artwork, traditional crests, and scattered cherry blossoms.
The principal face uses a black satin body with warm ivory sleeves, gold embroidery, patterned shoulder trim, and striped ribbing. Its back is dominated by the large inscription 傾奇御免, read as Kabuki Gomen, above crossed polearms and a paulownia-style crest. Gold calligraphy continues along the sleeves, giving the jacket a theatrical, unapologetically Japanese presence.
The reverse transforms the piece into a cleaner red-and-ivory bomber, creating two very different styling options in one collectible garment.
KABUKI GOMEN BACK DESIGN
The gold back inscription reads:
傾奇御免
Kabuki Gomen
The phrase may be understood loosely as “permission to live boldly and defy convention.” Here, kabuki refers to the flamboyant spirit of the historic kabukimono, unconventional warriors known for extravagant dress, personal freedom, and disregard for ordinary social expectations.
The expression has become especially associated with the legendary Sengoku-period figure Maeda Keiji and his modern popular-culture image as the ultimate free-spirited kabukimono.
Below the inscription, two silver polearms with red tassels cross over a large purple paulownia-style crest. Small pink and gold blossoms drift across the lower back, softening the martial imagery with a seasonal Japanese accent.
SKULL, SAKURA AND CALLIGRAPHY FRONT
The front balances two contrasting compositions.
One side is covered with embroidered pink and gold sakura blossoms, while the other features a large shadowed skull beneath vertical gold calligraphy:
人と会えば人を斬り
鬼と会えば鬼を斬る
A direct rendering is:
“Meet a man, cut down the man. Meet a demon, cut down the demon.”
The phrase expresses relentless resolve and the refusal to retreat from any opponent, whether human or supernatural.
Additional details include:
• Gold embroidered kanji extending onto the sleeves
• Decorative Japanese patterned shoulder tape
• Crest-style shoulder patch
• Black, ivory, gold, pink, purple, and red palette
• Contrasting striped collar, cuffs, and waistband
• Functional slanted hand pockets
REVERSIBLE RED SATIN FACE
The reverse presents a vivid red satin body with ivory sleeves and matching red sleeve stripes.
This side is deliberately restrained, allowing the lustrous textile, color blocking, and classic bomber silhouette to take center stage. It offers a cleaner alternative when the fully embroidered black face feels too ceremonial or visually intense.
The reversible construction gives the jacket two distinct personalities:
Black Face: Kabukimono calligraphy, skull, sakura, crest and weapon embroidery
Red Face: Minimal red-and-ivory Japanese bomber styling
MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION
The jacket is constructed from a smooth satin-finish synthetic textile with extensive machine embroidery.
Visible features include:
• Fully reversible construction
• Satin-finish outer panels
• Dense multicolor embroidery
• Full-length metal zipper
• Hand pockets on both faces
• Raglan-style sleeves
• Rib-knit collar, cuffs, and waistband
• Traditional short sukajan silhouette
The satin naturally reflects light differently across folds and movement, producing shifts between deep black, charcoal, ivory, crimson, and gold.
PERIOD AND STYLE
The construction, branding, graphics, and elaborate wagara embroidery appear consistent with Japanese Y2K and early-21st-century streetwear.
This is a fashion and collector sukajan rather than an early postwar military-tour jacket. Its visual language belongs to the Japanese crossover between souvenir-jacket tradition, samurai romanticism, tattoo art, manga-influenced warrior imagery, and rebellious street fashion.
CONDITION
Vintage pre-owned condition with age-appropriate character.
The satin may show natural creasing, light surface marks, gentle rubbing, small thread irregularities, and tonal variation from wear and storage. These characteristics form part of the jacket’s present vintage appearance rather than the uniform finish of a newly manufactured garment.
Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.
DIMENSIONS AND SIZING
Manufacturer’s Tag Size: Japanese S
Approximately comparable to a contemporary Western XS-S, or a fitted women’s S-M, depending on body shape, layering, and preferred silhouette.
Approximate flat measurements in centimeters:
A: Body Length: 63 cm
B: Body Width, Pit to Pit: 49 cm
C: Sleeve Length from Collar: 76 cm
D: Lower Sleeve Length: 48 cm
E: Hem / Waist Width: 36 cm
Japanese sukajan jackets commonly have a shorter body and more compact fit than contemporary Western outerwear. Comparing these measurements with a similar jacket that already fits comfortably is recommended.
