Two-Sided Japanese Wagara Jacket with Storm Dragon, Mount Fuji, Kingyo Goldfish and Lotus Embroidery

A dramatic reversible sukajan from Karakuri Tamashii, presenting two complete visions of Japanese decorative art in a single collector jacket.

One face combines ivory satin with black sleeves and a powerful storm dragon twisting beneath Mount Fuji, red flames and golden lightning. Reverse the jacket to reveal a black-and-gold composition filled with ornamental goldfish, flowing water lines and blooming lotus flowers.

Bold without becoming chaotic, this piece balances mythic power with aquatic elegance. The result is a wearable diptych: dragon fire on one side, floating serenity on the other.

Dragon, Mount Fuji and Lightning Face

The ivory side is dominated by a large charcoal-gray dragon embroidered across the back.

Its serpentine body coils through red flame-like forms, with sharply articulated scales, claws and whiskers creating a dynamic tattoo-inspired composition. Behind the dragon rises Mount Fuji, rendered in pale silver-gray thread, while angular golden lightning bolts split the surrounding sky.

Smaller matching dragons appear across the chest, giving the front a symmetrical and immediately recognizable sukajan presentation.

The color architecture is restrained and striking:

  • Warm ivory satin body
  • Black sleeves and shoulder panels
  • Charcoal and silver dragon embroidery
  • Deep red flames
  • Golden lightning
  • Black-and-ivory striped ribbing

Goldfish and Lotus Face

The reverse shifts into a darker, more ornamental atmosphere.

A black satin ground is framed by muted gold sleeves, while three embroidered goldfish move through scrolling golden water lines above a bed of lotus blossoms. The fish are rendered in red, ivory, silver and gold thread, their long flowing fins giving the composition a graceful sense of motion.

Two additional goldfish decorate the chest, creating a refined front that can be worn independently from the dragon face.

This side feels quieter but no less elaborate, combining the visual language of Japanese pond painting, textile ornament and contemporary wagara streetwear.

Motifs and Symbolism

Dragon

The Japanese dragon, or ryū, is traditionally associated with strength, protection, wisdom and elemental power. Unlike many Western dragons, it is closely connected with water, weather and the movement of clouds.

Lightning

The golden lightning introduces an atmosphere of divine force and sudden transformation. Paired with the dragon, it gives the embroidery the intensity of a storm breaking over the landscape.

Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji brings stability and permanence to the composition. Its calm silhouette behind the moving dragon creates a striking contrast between enduring landscape and restless energy.

Goldfish

Goldfish, or kingyo, have long been admired in Japan for their ornamental beauty. They are often associated with prosperity, abundance, elegance and the pleasures of summer.

Lotus Flowers

Lotus blossoms rise cleanly from muddy water and are traditionally connected with purity, renewal and spiritual resilience. Their presence softens the darker black-and-gold palette while adding symbolic depth.

Materials and Construction

The jacket appears to be made from lustrous satin-finish rayon or a comparable synthetic blend, with dense machine embroidery and rib-knit finishing.

Construction details include:

  • Fully reversible design
  • Raglan-style sleeve construction
  • Dense back and chest embroidery
  • Contrasting sleeve panels
  • Metal front zipper
  • Rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband
  • Welt pockets on both sides
  • Piped seam accents

The two sides are finished as complete wearable jackets rather than one decorated exterior with a plain lining.

Period and Style Assessment

The construction, embroidery style and branded wagara presentation appear consistent with Japanese streetwear produced during the Heisei era or early twenty-first century.

It is a modern reinterpretation of the classic Yokosuka souvenir jacket rather than an original postwar military-era sukajan, combining traditional visual themes with contemporary Japanese fashion production.

Condition

Vintage pre-owned condition with visible age-related character.

The ivory and pale gold areas show noticeable discoloration, uneven toning, marks and surface patina. Wrinkling, handling wear and general fabric variation are also present throughout, particularly on the lighter-colored panels.

The embroidery remains visually strong and detailed, with both reversible faces retaining substantial decorative impact.

Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description. The jacket is offered with its existing vintage wear, patina and imperfections.

Size and Fit

Manufacturer’s Tag Size: L

Japanese size L garments frequently fit closer to a contemporary Western Medium, depending on shoulder width, chest measurement, layering and preferred silhouette.

Please compare the jacket with a similar garment that fits comfortably before purchasing.

Styling and Display

The dragon face pairs naturally with black denim, combat boots, wide-leg trousers and monochrome streetwear. Its ivory body gives the embroidery enough contrast to remain striking without relying on a loud base color.

The goldfish face works beautifully with neutral layers, vintage denim, Japanese workwear and softer earth tones.

It may also be displayed as textile art, with either the storm dragon or goldfish composition facing outward.
