雲深くして処を知らず
Kumo fukaku shite tokoro o shirazu

English interpretation:
“Deep in the clouds, his whereabouts are unknown.”

The phrase evokes a hidden mountain landscape veiled by dense clouds, where the person being sought remains somewhere beyond sight. It expresses distance, mystery, solitude, and the limits of ordinary perception.

The words originate from the final line of the classical poem Seeking the Recluse and Not Finding Him. In the poem, a visitor searches for a hermit who has gone into the mountains to gather medicinal herbs. Although the hermit is said to be somewhere nearby, the deep clouds conceal his location. The phrase later became appreciated within Japanese Zen and tea culture for its atmosphere of spiritual searching and unseen truth.
