Golden Koi, Pine and Waves on Black Satin with a Crimson Reversible Side

A striking vintage Japanese sukajan built around one of the most enduring symbols in Japanese visual culture: the koi swimming against the current.

The principal black satin side features a large embroidered koi surrounded by curling water, stylized pine needles and rhythmic wave lines. Ivory, champagne-gold and muted metallic threads create a restrained monochrome composition that feels closer to traditional ink painting and tattoo flash than brightly colored contemporary streetwear.

Reverse the jacket to reveal an entirely different personality. The second side combines a rich crimson-red quilted body with pale champagne sleeves, mirrored koi embroidery across the chest and classic striped ribbing. One side is dark and contemplative; the other arrives with theatrical red-satin energy.

A Tale of Endurance in Thread

The koi, or koi carp, is traditionally associated with perseverance, courage, ambition and transformation. Its ability to swim against powerful currents made it an emblem of determined progress and success achieved through adversity.

The large koi is positioned diagonally across the black side, giving the impression that it is climbing through moving water. Its scales are individually articulated in alternating ivory and antique-gold thread, while the pine-like foliage beside it contributes another layer of symbolism.

Pine, or matsu, is an evergreen motif connected with longevity, steadfastness and endurance through difficult seasons. Together, koi and pine create a design centered on resilience, strength and continuity.

Reversible Design

Black Koi Side

  • Deep black satin ground
  • Large full-back koi embroidery
  • Pine needle and stylized water motifs
  • Ivory, champagne and antique-gold thread palette
  • Coordinating koi imagery extending across the front
  • Pale rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband

Crimson Side

  • Rich red quilted satin body
  • Champagne-ivory sleeves
  • Mirrored koi and wave embroidery across the chest
  • Red and ivory striped rib-knit finishing
  • Clean, undecorated back for a quieter alternate look
  • Functional hand pockets on both wearable sides

The reversible format offers two distinct styling directions while preserving the classic rounded sukajan silhouette.

Style and Construction

This jacket follows the traditional Yokosuka souvenir-jacket form with raglan sleeves, a reversible metal zipper, knitted trim and lightweight satin construction.

The black face presents the visual drama of the embroidery, while the crimson face provides a cleaner vintage sportswear appearance. The soft shine of the satin changes with the light, emphasizing the age-related texture, quilted stitching and dimensional threadwork.

Its balanced black, red, ivory and gold palette works particularly well with denim, leather, military trousers or monochrome Japanese streetwear.

Period Assessment

The construction, quilting, reversible format and embroidery style appear consistent with later 20th-century Japanese sukajan production, likely dating from the late Shōwa to early Heisei period.

The jacket draws directly from classic postwar souvenir-jacket vocabulary while using a more expansive koi composition associated with later tattoo-influenced Japanese fashion.

Condition

Vintage pre-owned condition with visible age-appropriate character.

Natural satin creasing, tonal variation, light surface wear and areas of discoloration are present, particularly across the pale sleeves and rib-knit trim. The black satin has developed a softly mottled appearance that contributes to its authentic vintage atmosphere.

The embroidery remains bold and visually expressive. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an essential part of the condition description.

Size

Marked Size: L

Vintage Japanese sizing can differ from contemporary Western sizing. Please compare the garment with a similar jacket that fits comfortably before purchasing.

Why Collect This Jacket

This piece has the qualities collectors seek in an expressive vintage sukajan:

  • Two fully wearable colorways
  • Large-scale koi embroidery
  • Traditional Japanese symbolism
  • Strong black, red and antique-gold palette
  • Characterful vintage surface and patina
  • Classic reversible souvenir-jacket construction
  • Excellent crossover appeal for tattoo-art, streetwear and Japanese textile collectors

The restrained coloring distinguishes it from brighter reproduction jackets, while the visible age gives it a presence that newly manufactured pieces cannot easily imitate.

Display and Styling

Wear the black side with faded denim, black trousers, engineer boots or minimalist layers to emphasize the koi artwork.

Turn to the crimson side for a bolder vintage sportswear look. The red body pairs beautifully with cream, indigo, charcoal and black, while the smaller chest embroidery keeps the reverse visually balanced.

Beyond clothing, the jacket can also be displayed as collectible Japanese textile art, particularly with the embroidered black side facing outward.
