Blue Koi and Sakura Embroidery on Black Satin with a Crimson Brocade Reverse

A dramatic Japanese souvenir jacket where midnight black satin, icy blue koi, drifting pink sakura, and luminous crimson brocade meet in one reversible statement piece.

This vintage sukajan presents two distinct personalities. The embroidered side is bold and graphic, built around a monumental koi carp swimming through curling waves and scattered cherry blossoms. Turn the jacket inside out to reveal a restrained crimson-red brocade face with ivory sleeves, allowing the piece to shift from maximal embroidered art to elegant tonal texture.

The contrast is deliciously theatrical: moonlit water on one side, glowing ceremonial red on the other. 🐟🌸

Koi, Sakura and Flowing Water

The large back composition features a blue, silver and ivory koi rendered through dense embroidery against a black satin ground. Stylized wave lines surround the fish, while pale pink cherry blossoms float across the body and sleeves.

The front continues the story with two smaller koi arranged across the chest, accompanied by sakura petals and rippling water details. The embroidery extends onto the sleeves, giving the jacket a balanced presentation from every angle rather than reserving all visual impact for the back.

Koi are traditionally associated with perseverance, courage, transformation and the ability to continue moving against difficult currents. Sakura introduce a gentler counterpoint, representing beauty, renewal and the fleeting character of each season. Together they create a design built around resilience without heaviness: strength moving through falling flowers.

Reversible Crimson Brocade Side

The reverse face transforms the garment into a rich red-and-ivory bomber with woven brocade-style patterning across the satin.

The crimson body carries a subtle all-over decorative texture that catches and releases light as the jacket moves. Ivory raglan sleeves soften the palette, while striped rib-knit finishing preserves the classic sukajan silhouette.

This quieter side is especially versatile for styling, offering a more refined alternative when the embroidered koi face feels too commanding for the occasion.

Sukajan Heritage

Japanese sukajan developed from the souvenir jackets associated with American personnel stationed in Asia during the postwar period. Their baseball-inspired construction, silky fabrics and embroidered Japanese imagery created a distinctive fusion of military-tour keepsake, regional craftsmanship and rebellious streetwear.

This example continues that visual language through its contrasting sleeves, ribbed collar and cuffs, reversible construction, bright satin surfaces and narrative embroidery.

Craftsmanship and Construction

The jacket features:

  • Reversible two-sided construction
  • Black satin embroidered face
  • Crimson brocade-style reverse
  • Ivory contrasting raglan sleeves
  • Large koi, wave and sakura back embroidery
  • Coordinating twin koi chest embroidery
  • Sakura embroidery extending along the sleeves
  • Full front zipper
  • Angled hand pockets
  • Striped rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband
  • Classic unisex souvenir-bomber silhouette

The pale blue and silver embroidery has a cool, almost moonlit character against the black ground, while the pink blossoms keep the composition from becoming severe. On the reverse, the crimson brocade shimmers with a quieter kind of drama, more opera curtain than neon sign.

Styling and Collector Appeal

This jacket works beautifully with black denim, washed indigo, wide-leg trousers, leather boots or minimalist monochrome layers. The embroidered face can anchor an entire outfit, while the red brocade side offers a softer vintage-luxury mood.

It is equally suitable for:

  • Japanese streetwear collections
  • Sukajan and souvenir-jacket archives
  • Koi or tattoo-art enthusiasts
  • Reversible fashion collectors
  • Stage, editorial and photography styling
  • Wearable-art displays
  • Statement festival or evening dressing

Its size L designation and reversible construction increase its practical appeal, while the restrained color balance makes it more versatile than many heavily multicolored sukajan designs.

Condition

Vintage pre-owned condition with signs of age-appropriate wear, natural satin creasing and light surface variation visible in the photographs.

The embroidered koi and sakura compositions remain visually strong and clearly defined. The brocade reverse, rib-knit trim, sleeves, zipper and pockets should be reviewed closely through the listing photographs, which form an essential part of the condition description.

Vintage garments are sold with their existing character, including minor imperfections acquired through age, storage and previous wear.

Manufacturer’s Tag Size: L

Japanese vintage sizing may fit smaller or shorter than contemporary Western sizing. This piece may suit a modern Western medium to trim large depending on body shape, layering preference and desired silhouette.
