Charcoal Satin and Ivory-Pink Jacquard Japanese Souvenir Jacket

Storm gods on one side. Thunder rolling across silk-like clouds on the other.

This striking vintage Japanese sukajan presents Fūjin and Raijin, the legendary gods of wind and thunder, across two dramatically different reversible compositions. One face is dark, atmospheric and turbulent; the reverse opens into luminous ivory and pale blush jacquard, transforming the same mythology into an almost ceremonial textile scene.

The result is a true two-in-one collector jacket: forceful Japanese streetwear on one side, refined embroidered artwear on the other.

FUJIN AND RAIJIN SIDE

The charcoal-grey face depicts both storm deities moving through embroidered cloud formations.

Fūjin, the wind god, appears in green with his flowing wind sack, while Raijin, the thunder god, is represented with his characteristic circular arrangement of drums. Spiraling wind, layered cloud scrolls and trailing cords create a composition filled with movement.

The restrained palette of charcoal, antique ivory, muted green, burgundy and pale gold gives this side a weathered, almost ink-painting quality.

Rather than presenting the figures as decorative mascots, the embroidery captures their wild energy. The gods appear suspended within the storm itself, surrounded by forces that seem to turn and circulate across the jacket.

Fūjin and Raijin form one of the most recognizable paired deity traditions in Japanese art, representing the forces of wind, thunder and violent weather.

RAIJIN JACQUARD SIDE

The reverse reveals a completely different visual character.

A luminous ivory jacquard body is paired with pale blush-pink sleeves, creating a soft ground for the central embroidered figure of Raijin. The thunder god appears surrounded by his circular drum frame, dark streaming ribbons and pale cloud formations.

Subtle woven landscape and botanical patterns move across the satin surface beneath the embroidery. These tonal jacquard details emerge and disappear as the fabric catches the light, giving the jacket a layered textile richness that cannot be achieved through printed graphics.

The pale palette does not diminish Raijin’s power. Instead, it gives the figure the presence of an embroidered temple textile or decorative folding-screen subject.

EMBROIDERY AND COLOR

The two sides offer distinct but complementary palettes.

Charcoal Side

• Smoky charcoal-grey body
• Aged ivory sleeves
• Green, white and burgundy deity embroidery
• Pale gold circular details
• Silver-grey cloud and wind patterns
• Grey and ivory striped ribbing

Ivory-Pink Side

• Ivory jacquard body
• Pale blush-pink sleeves
• White, taupe and charcoal Raijin embroidery
• Gold-brown drum details
• Tonal woven landscape patterns
• Grey and ivory striped ribbing

The embroidery uses layered directional stitching to define hair, musculature, cloud forms, ribbons and supernatural movement. The raised threadwork gives the figures a tactile presence against the fluid satin ground.

PERIOD ASSESSMENT

The reversible construction, satin textile, pastel jacquard reverse and detailed wagara embroidery appear consistent with late-20th-century to early-2000s Japanese sukajan production.

The precise manufacturer and production year are not confirmed.

Its unusual combination of dark storm imagery and pale decorative jacquard gives the jacket strong vintage Japanese streetwear and Y2K collector appeal.

SYMBOLISM

Fūjin, 風神

Fūjin embodies wind, atmospheric movement and the invisible force carried across the landscape. His billowing sack is traditionally understood as the vessel from which the winds are released.

Raijin, 雷神

Raijin commands thunder and lightning. His ring of drums creates one of the most immediately recognizable silhouettes in Japanese mythological art.

Clouds and Spiraling Wind

The embroidered clouds and circular currents bind the two figures together. Their curling forms suggest wind pressure, thunder, changing weather and the continual movement of natural forces.

Together, the imagery forms a dramatic meditation on energy that cannot be contained.

CONDITION

Vintage condition with visible character consistent with age and previous wear.

The satin displays natural creasing, gentle surface variation and areas of tonal change. Light age-related wear may be present along the sleeves, ribbing, seams and high-contact areas.

The principal deity, cloud and drum embroidery remains visually strong in the supplied photographs, retaining excellent color separation and overall impact.

Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description. This garment is offered with its authentic vintage texture and patina preserved.

SIZE AND FIT

Manufacturer’s tag size is not visible in the supplied photographs.

Japanese vintage sizing frequently differs from modern international sizing. Exact flat measurements should be confirmed before purchase and compared with a similar jacket that fits comfortably.

The raglan construction allows a naturally relaxed shoulder line, but chest width, body length and sleeve reach should remain the deciding measurements.
