Rising Carp, Cascading Water, Pine and Rockwork in Monumental Japanese Embroidery
A dramatic vintage Japanese sukajan centered on one of the most enduring images in East Asian art: a powerful carp ascending a waterfall.
The jacket pairs a deep black satin body with ivory raglan sleeves, monochrome striped ribbing and an extraordinarily large embroidered composition that travels from the upper shoulder across nearly the entire back. The koi rises through foaming water beneath a vertical cascade, framed by emerald pine, weathered rocks and leafy bamboo.
Bold enough for Japanese streetwear, yet composed with the visual rhythm of a traditional hanging scroll, this is wearable textile art with unmistakable presence.
THE BACK PANEL
The reverse is dominated by a large black-and-white carp shown climbing against the force of a waterfall.
Rather than floating peacefully in a pond, the fish is portrayed in active ascent. Its head turns upward toward the falling water, while carefully layered scales, fins and whiskers give the figure depth and movement.
The surrounding landscape includes:
• A tall vertical waterfall
• Cresting waves and white foam
• Ancient pine trees
• Weathered rocks and cliffs
• Green bamboo foliage
• Open black negative space
• Ivory, silver, green and pale blue threadwork
The embroidery extends beyond the central back field and reaches into the shoulder area, giving the composition an expansive, almost mural-like scale.
THE ASCENDING CARP
The image of a carp climbing a waterfall is associated with courage, perseverance and advancement through difficulty.
According to the Dragon Gate legend, a carp capable of overcoming the rapids transforms into a dragon. In Japanese visual culture, the ascending carp consequently became an emblem of strength, ambition and success earned through endurance.
Here, the waterfall is not merely scenery. It is the obstacle that gives the koi its meaning.
The fish rises because the current pushes against it.
PINE, ROCK AND WATER
Pine, Matsu 松
The evergreen pine traditionally suggests endurance, longevity and constancy. Its richly embroidered branches spread across the upper and lower portions of the design, framing the koi with a sense of age and resilience.
Flowing Water, Ryūsui 流水
The waterfall and foaming currents introduce continuous movement into the composition. Pale silver and ivory threads create contrast against the black ground, allowing the water to appear almost luminous.
Rockwork, Iwa 岩
The rugged cliffs and stones reinforce the imagery of struggle and ascent. Their subdued beige, grey and brown tones balance the intense green of the pine.
Bamboo Foliage, Take 竹
The green leaves near the lower waterfall introduce another traditional association with resilience and flexible strength.
Together, these motifs form a complete landscape of endurance: the steadfast pine, the unyielding rock, the moving water and the ascending fish.
COLOR AND EMBROIDERY
The restrained palette gives this jacket unusual elegance.
• Main body: deep black
• Sleeves: aged ivory and champagne
• Koi: ivory, silver, grey and black
• Water: ivory, silver and pale blue
• Pine: emerald and forest green
• Rocks: beige, taupe, brown and grey
• Ribbing: black and ivory stripes
The koi’s scales are individually articulated through repeating stitch patterns, while the waterfall is formed through long vertical lines that contrast with the curling foam below.
The pine needles use dense, dimensional embroidery, giving the branches a soft raised texture against the satin surface.
MATERIAL AND CONSTRUCTION
The jacket follows the traditional Yokosuka souvenir-jacket silhouette:
• Rayon or rayon-like satin shell
• Contrasting raglan sleeves
• Full embroidered back composition
• Rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband
• Front zipper closure
• Lightweight lined bomber construction
• Unisex vintage fit
The exact fiber percentages are not confirmed.
The satin surface has the characteristic soft sheen and fluid drape associated with classic souvenir jackets. It changes subtly under different lighting, shifting from inky black to deep charcoal across the folds.
PERIOD ASSESSMENT
The construction, embroidery density, color palette and large-scale wagara composition appear consistent with late 20th-century to early 2000s Japanese sukajan production.
The precise maker and production year are not confirmed.
Its monumental back embroidery and subdued black, ivory and green palette distinguish it from brighter contemporary souvenir jackets and give it strong Y2K Japanese streetwear appeal.
CONDITION
Vintage condition with visible age-related character.
The ivory sleeves and ribbed trim display natural toning, discoloration and signs of previous wear. The satin also shows wrinkles, surface variation and gentle aging consistent with a pre-owned vintage garment.
The principal koi, waterfall, pine and rock embroidery remains visually strong in the supplied photograph, with the large composition retaining excellent impact.
Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an essential part of the condition description. Vintage garments are offered with their authentic age, patina and individual textile character preserved.
SIZE AND MEASUREMENTS
Manufacturer’s tag size is not confirmed.
Please select this jacket according to its actual flat measurements rather than relying on modern international sizing. Compare the measurements shown in the listing photographs with a similar jacket that fits you comfortably.
Allow additional room for layering and natural movement through the chest, shoulders and sleeves.
WHY THIS JACKET STANDS APART
• Monumental rising-koi back embroidery
• Classical waterfall and Dragon Gate imagery
• Deep black body with aged ivory sleeves
• Pine, rock, bamboo and wave landscape
• Dense multicolor Japanese embroidery
• Traditional Yokosuka bomber silhouette
• Strong late-1990s and Y2K streetwear presence
• Elegant monochrome palette with emerald accents
• Visually impressive for wear or wall display
• Unisex collector garment

The design carries the force of a tattoo backpiece, but its structure remains rooted in Japanese landscape art.
