Standing approximately 31 cm tall, this substantial vessel combines the architectural form of a ceremonial flower stand with unusually sculptural decoration. Its cylindrical central body is surrounded by branch-like side ornaments resembling ancient pine trees, while the relief surface depicts cranes within a natural landscape.

The upper section opens into the broad, shallow tray characteristic of the usubata form, designed to support formal Japanese flower arrangements while maintaining a low visual horizon around the stems.

Dark bronze-toned surfaces, traces of warmer metal beneath the patina and softly highlighted relief create considerable depth, giving the vessel a commanding presence even when displayed without flowers.

The Usubata Form

The usubata is one of the distinctive vessels associated with traditional Japanese flower arrangement.

Its defining feature is the broad, shallow upper rim combined with a relatively narrow central flower opening. The word is commonly translated in reference to its thin or shallow upper edge, distinguishing the form from ordinary household flower vases.

Takaoka metalworkers became especially known for producing flower vessels, Buddhist implements, incense burners, decorative sculpture and other complex cast objects. The region also developed highly sophisticated finishing, carving, coloring and inlay techniques.

Because no clearly photographed maker's inscription or original documentation accompanies the vessel at present, the Takaoka attribution should be treated as stylistic rather than definitive.
