Vintage Japanese Suigetsu Kannon Giltwood Statue, Water Moon Bodhisattva Crescent Halo, 53cm Buddhist Sculpture

Introduction

A remarkably atmospheric Japanese Buddhist sculpture depicting Suigetsu Kannon, the Water-Moon Kannon, seated in a relaxed contemplative pose within an enormous sweeping crescent form.

At approximately 53 cm tall, the sculpture has an unusually architectural presence. The slender crescent rises dramatically above Kannon before curving downward beneath the seated figure, turning the traditional Buddhist image into an almost calligraphic silhouette.

Carved from wood and finished with aged gold-toned gilding, the surface has developed deep areas of wear and exposed darker underlayers. Rather than diminishing the work, this weathered surface gives the sculpture extraordinary depth, allowing highlights to flicker across the folds of the robes, jewelry, face, hands, and moon-shaped surround.

The result is a devotional object with equal strength as Buddhist sculpture, Japanese decorative art, and a dramatic wabi-sabi interior piece.

Water-Moon Kannon

Suigetsu Kannon is one of the poetic manifestations of Kannon, the Bodhisattva associated with compassion.

The name is conventionally translated as Water-Moon Kannon. In East Asian Buddhist art, the image developed around Kannon contemplating the moon reflected upon water, an image closely associated with the elusive and impermanent nature of appearances.

The Nara National Museum describes historic Water-Moon Kannon imagery as Kannon gazing upon the moon's reflection on the water, an iconography that became established in Japan from the Kamakura period onward.

This sculpture takes that contemplative idea into three-dimensional form.

Kannon sits with one knee raised and the body gently inclined, the head tilted with remarkable softness. The pose is informal compared with rigid frontal Buddhist images and creates the impression of a deity momentarily at rest, absorbed in quiet observation.

The Crescent Form

The spectacular crescent-shaped surround is the defining visual feature of this piece.

Beginning near the lower left side of the figure, it sweeps outward and upward in a broad arc before narrowing toward a high pointed tip. Seen from the rear, the crescent surrounds the seated figure almost completely, creating a strong silhouette from every viewing angle.

Its form transforms the sculpture from a conventional altar figure into something highly sculptural.

The crescent may be understood as a visual interpretation of the lunar theme associated with Suigetsu Kannon rather than the circular halo more commonly seen in Buddhist statuary. It gives the piece a distinctive modern decorative quality while remaining rooted in Water-Moon Buddhist imagery.

Carving and Surface

The figure is carved with considerable attention to movement.

Long textile folds descend from both arms and continue below the crescent line, creating vertical counterpoints to the large sweeping moon.

Layered necklaces and chest ornaments add smaller points of detail, while the robe gathers naturally around the raised knee. The facial expression is composed rather than idealized, with lowered eyes and a subtle contemplative inclination of the head.

The reverse has also been worked rather than left unfinished. Drapery folds continue across the back and the hairstyle and crown are visible from behind, allowing the sculpture to be displayed away from a wall if desired.

Aged Gold Patina

The gilded finish has developed extensive and visually beautiful age wear.

Large areas of gold remain across the robes, face, body, crescent and base, while other sections reveal a dark brown-black ground beneath.

This creates a highly irregular surface in which light catches only selected areas.

From a distance, the sculpture appears predominantly golden. At closer range, the darker exposed sections become increasingly visible, giving it the layered character associated with long-handled devotional objects and older Japanese decorative works.

The crescent itself is particularly expressive, with broad passages where gilding has softened or worn away.

For collectors drawn to wabi-sabi aesthetics, this naturally irregular surface is one of the most compelling aspects of the sculpture.

A Sculpture That Changes With Light

Lighting dramatically alters the character of this piece.

In soft ambient light, the worn gold surface becomes subdued and meditative.

Under stronger directional illumination, the surviving gilding catches sharply along the face, jewelry, robes and edges of the crescent, while the exposed darker ground recedes into shadow.

Its tall narrow profile makes it especially effective against darker timber, plaster, stone, or a simple neutral wall.
