Rare dark-indigo women’s denim with chōchō butterfly embroidery, flowing Japanese-inspired ornament and signature Yamane detailing

A richly decorated pair of vintage EVISU Donna jeans that transforms dark indigo denim into wearable textile art. Butterflies, scattered flowers and ribbon-like ornamental forms travel across the front and continue onto the back, creating an unusually elaborate composition from every angle.

The deep blue denim carries naturally developed fading and tonal variation, while ivory, crimson, pale blue and soft yellow embroidery rises vividly from the surface. Distinctly feminine without becoming delicate, this is statement denim with the visual force of early Japanese streetwear and the romantic excess of Y2K fashion.

Identification

Brand: EVISU Donna / Yamane
Garment type: Women’s embroidered denim jeans
Tagged size: 26 x 32
Material: 100% cotton
Country of manufacture: China, as marked on the waistband label
Color: Dark indigo blue
Cut: Slim straight silhouette with a gently widened, bootcut-style hem
Likely period: 2000s
Closure: Branded metal waist button with concealed front fly
Pocket configuration: Traditional five-pocket construction

The waistband retains its woven Yamane label, the rear carries a brown Yamane patch, and the copper-toned buttons and rivets are decorated with crest-like branding.

Chōchō Butterfly Motif

The principal subject is chōchō, or butterfly, one of the most enduring decorative motifs in Japanese visual culture.

Butterflies are traditionally associated with transformation, renewal, beauty and the fleeting nature of life. Their movement from one form into another has also made them natural symbols of personal evolution and rebirth.

Here, multiple butterflies appear in ivory and crimson embroidery, their wings articulated through dots, curved veins and contrasting outlines. Rather than being placed as isolated logos, they gather around circular crests, small radiating flowers and long ornamental streams, producing the feeling of butterflies moving through a stylized garden.

The embroidery crosses conventional garment boundaries. It appears across both front thighs and continues over the right rear pocket and upper leg, allowing the artwork to remain visible whether the jeans are viewed from the front, side or back.

Flowing Wagara Ornament

The most dramatic element is the serpentine composition embroidered across the wearer’s left leg.

Crimson, ivory and muted blue forms curl downward in a rhythmic sequence, punctuated by small circular crests and surrounded by blossoms and butterflies. The design resembles a fusion of flowing ribbons, decorative water currents and the bold enlarged graphics associated with Japanese wagara fashion.

This asymmetrical arrangement gives the jeans a distinctly directional presence. One leg carries the long sweeping movement, while the opposite thigh presents a compact butterfly medallion. The result feels carefully balanced rather than mechanically mirrored.

Rear Design

The rear continues the artwork rather than retreating into a standard denim finish.

One back pocket displays a broad dark Yamane-style painted arc, subtly visible against the indigo surface. The opposite side carries the embroidered ribbon and butterfly composition across the pocket and upper leg, integrating the practical pocket construction into the artwork.

Contrasting golden-brown stitching outlines the pockets, yoke and seams, adding another layer of warmth against the cool blue denim.

Denim, Construction and Finish

The jeans are made from substantial 100% cotton denim with a dark indigo wash. Natural wear has produced soft whiskering, crease patterns and gently mottled fading, especially through the lap, thighs and knees.

The fabric retains a strong visual depth. In brighter light, the twill reveals blue highlights and worn-in texture; in shadow, it returns to an almost midnight indigo.

Construction details include:

  • Five-pocket jean architecture
  • Reinforced copper-tone rivets
  • Branded waist button
  • Contrast tobacco-colored stitching
  • Embroidered artwork across the front and back
  • Yamane-style painted rear-pocket detail
  • Brown rear waistband patch
  • Original woven size and composition label
  • Finished hems with contrasting chain-style appearance

Brand and Period Context

EVISU was founded in Osaka in 1991 and became internationally recognized for combining vintage-inspired denim construction with bold pocket graphics and Japanese design identity. The women-focused EVISU Donna line emerged at the end of the 1990s, extending the label’s denim language into more fitted, decorative and fashion-forward womenswear.

The elaborate embroidery, fitted cut and low-to-mid-rise proportions of this pair are consistent with the expressive denim culture of the 2000s. During that period, heavily decorated jeans became central to Japanese streetwear, club fashion and the worldwide Y2K aesthetic.

This example is especially compelling because its ornament is not restricted to a single logo or pocket. The butterflies and flowing forms occupy much of the garment, placing it closer to wearable graphic art than conventional branded denim.

Condition

Good vintage pre-owned condition with visible character from previous wear.

The denim displays natural fading, whiskering, creasing and tonal variation throughout. Light surface and edge wear may be present, consistent with age and use. The embroidery remains bright, dimensional and visually prominent, with no major loss apparent.

No major holes or significant structural damage are noted. The hems, pockets, waistband, hardware and principal seams remain present and wearable.

Please examine all photographs closely, as they form an important part of the condition description. Vintage garments may show small irregularities, softened areas, loose threads or marks that contribute to their individual history.

Measurements

Measurements were taken with the garment laid flat and should be treated as approximate.

Tagged size: 26 x 32

Waist, laid flat: approximately 39 to 40 cm / 15.4 to 15.7 in
Approximate waist circumference: 78 to 80 cm / 30.7 to 31.5 in
Front rise: approximately 24 to 25 cm / 9.4 to 9.8 in
Inseam: approximately 70 cm / 27.6 in
Leg opening, laid flat: approximately 20 to 21 cm / 7.9 to 8.3 in

The presently measured inseam is shorter than the 32-inch length printed on the original label. Please rely on the physical measurements rather than the tagged size alone.

Because this is a fitted women’s design, compare these measurements with a similar pair of jeans that fits comfortably. Waist placement, hip measurement and preferred rise can significantly affect fit.

Visual Presence and Styling

These jeans can anchor an outfit without requiring excessive accessories.

Pair them with a fitted white tank, cropped knit or simple black top to let the embroidery remain central. For a stronger Japanese streetwear direction, combine them with a sukajan, cropped bomber, platform shoes or vintage leather jacket.

The gently widened hem works naturally with boots, heels and substantial sneakers. Their dark indigo base also prevents the decorative embroidery from feeling costume-like, allowing the jeans to move between collectible fashion, everyday streetwear and editorial styling.

They would appeal especially to collectors of:

  • EVISU and Yamane denim
  • EVISU Donna womenswear
  • Japanese embroidered clothing
  • Y2K designer fashion
  • Wagara streetwear
  • Butterfly and floral motifs
  • Amekaji-inspired fashion
  • Vintage Japanese denim culture
  • Wearable textile art
  • Rare statement jeans

Why This Pair Stands Apart

EVISU denim is often identified through a single painted or embroidered rear-pocket mark. This pair presents a much more expansive design program.

Its embroidered butterflies travel across both sides of the garment, the flowing ornament continues onto the back, and the dark painted pocket detail remains quietly visible beneath the larger composition. The garment shifts constantly as it is worn, revealing different sections of the artwork through movement.

The smaller tagged size, dramatic decoration and unmistakable 2000s silhouette also make this an increasingly difficult configuration to locate. It represents the moment when premium denim, Japanese street culture and embellished Y2K fashion collided in one gloriously embroidered storm 🦋
