Two Koi Kakejiku Hanging Scroll, Charcoal and Orange-Marked White Carp in Teal Water, Gold Brocade, Vintage

Two koi glide through deep teal-blue water in this vintage Japanese kakejiku, a charcoal fish with finely patterned scales above a larger white koi marked in vivid orange and black. Faint submerged silhouettes deepen the water, and warm gold brocade frames a scene that is serene without feeling static.
The Piece
The upper fish is rendered in charcoal gray with carefully patterned scales and a warm golden tone along its underside. Beneath it swims a larger white koi with orange and black patches. Faint submerged fish silhouettes in the background are intentional elements of the composition, adding movement, depth and underwater atmosphere.
The horizontal aquatic painting is mounted within a traditional vertical hanging scroll. Warm gold floral brocade surrounds the central artwork, and golden-brown textile panels complete the upper and lower mounting. An artist's inscription and vermilion seal appear at the lower-right corner of the image.
Koi are associated in Japanese and wider East Asian decorative traditions with perseverance, vitality, courage, advancement and good fortune, and a pair may also suggest companionship, balance and harmony. Meanings vary, and the scroll is offered as a fine example of Japanese fish imagery rather than as a guaranteed spiritual or feng shui object. The calm rhythm of teal water and overlapping fish, lit by the orange markings, suits a living room, study, dining room, tea room, meditation space or hospitality setting, or a collection of koi and Asian nature art.
