Late Edo–Early Meiji • Temple-withdrawn devotional icon • Complete zushi relationship

Catalogue Note: A compact portable zushi (travel shrine) containing a seated image of Kannon Bosatsu, carved in wood and preserved with honest ritual wear. Cabinet and figure together preserve the logic of use rather than later decoration.

Iconography

Right hand raised in reassurance (semui-in); left hand lowered, plausibly once holding an attribute now absent.

  • Figure: H 16.8 cm; W 8.7 cm; D 6.7 cm
  • Zushi: H 25.0 cm; W 13.0 cm; D 11.0 cm
  • Total weight (figure + zushi): approx. 0.73 kg

Condition

Age wear, minor chips/abrasions, missing small metal ornamentation around the facial area, missing held attribute, and doors not closing perfectly; oxidation on lower fittings consistent with age and use.
