A vintage Tedman souvenir jacket that borrows the visual grammar of the ukiyo-e woodblock print. Raijin the thunder god, a glamorous oiran, a five-story pagoda and Mt. Fuji with hawk and eggplant gather into one embroidered Edo-inspired panorama.

The Piece

Offered here is a vintage Tedman sukajan from Ted Company, designed in the manner of an ukiyo-e woodblock print. Its imagery brings together Kaminari-sama Raijin, the thunder god; a glamorous oiran or maiko in the geisha tradition; a goju-no-to five-story pagoda temple; and Mt. Fuji accompanied by a hawk and an eggplant (nasu).

Fuji, hawk and eggplant form a well-known Japanese trio of good fortune: by custom, dreaming of them in the first dream of the New Year is said to bring luck. Raijin, drummer of the storm, is among the most recognizable deities of Japanese art. Set within the souvenir-jacket form, these motifs read as a compact anthology of Edo imagery, in the spirit of the yanki and yakuza-inflected Japanese street style with which Tedman is associated.
