Standing Seishi Bosatsu (Mahasthamaprapta) — Wood Sculpture with Jeweled Crown

A quiet, dignified bodhisattva presence carved in wood and preserved with temple-like honesty. This figure is best read as Seishi Bosatsu (Mahasthamaprapta), the “Power of Great Wisdom,” revered as the right-hand attendant in the classic Pure Land triad alongside Amida Nyorai and Kannon. Seishi represents the steady force of awakened resolve—clarity, courage, and the disciplined momentum of practice—expressed here through a composed stance, restrained gesture, and crowned bodhisattva rank.

The surface retains an aged lacquer character with traces consistent with former color and possible gilding. Losses and small damages are present as expected for an object of devotional life; the resulting patina reads as evidence of time—incense, handling, and seasonal humidity—rather than a modern decorative finish. Period is treated as Kamakura–Muromachi taste (per listing), with dating held as provisional without in-hand examination.

MATERIAL, PERIOD & ATTRIBUTION

  • Material: carved wood with old lacquer surface; traces consistent with former polychromy and/or gilding (unconfirmed).
  • Period (disclosed): Kamakura–Muromachi taste (listing claim; treated as provisional).
  • Iconography: crowned bodhisattva attendant consistent with Seishi Bosatsu (Mahasthamaprapta) in Pure Land contexts.
  • Condition: losses and small damages noted; please verify crown/attachments and base areas by photographs.

WHO IS THIS DEITY?

Seishi Bosatsu (Mahasthamaprapta) is among the most important bodhisattvas of Pure Land Buddhism. In Japan, Seishi appears with Amida and Kannon as the celebrated Amida Triad, associated with guidance toward rebirth in the Pure Land. Kannon embodies compassion; Seishi embodies the power of wisdom and practice—the force that turns insight into lived vow. Collectors often value Seishi for its quiet strength: a devotional presence that deepens over time.

DIMENSIONS & WEIGHT (ESTIMATED)

  • Height (listing): total approx. 35.9 cm; figure approx. 28.4 cm.
  • Estimated footprint: approx. 10–14 cm wide × 8–12 cm deep (lotus base).

Collector Relevance

Ideal for Pure Land collectors, triad builders, and those curating a devotional study shelf: an object that reads as devotional first, decorative second—restrained, steady, and altar-friendly, with a silhouette defined by crowned rank and lotus-grounded calm.

Confidence & Verification Notes: Deity identification and period are based on listing context and visible iconography and are provided in good faith; confirm details via close inspection of crown motifs, construction, and surfaces. Former polychromy/gilding is plausible but unproven.
