The Piece
Shishi stand in pairs at temple and shrine gates to ward off evil, and the shishimai lion dance brings their protective energy into the streets at New Year and festivals. As an embroidered motif it unites ferocity with good fortune.
The sukajan, or Yokosuka jumper, began in postwar Japan as an embroidered satin souvenir jacket made for American servicemen stationed around the Yokosuka naval base, and has since become one of the defining hybrid garments of Japanese fashion.
