Seated Buddha in Gold-Toned Linework on Black, Radiant Halo and Clouds, Inscribed Hanging Scroll with Box

A seated Buddha emerges in luminous gold-toned line from a deep black ground, framed by stylized celestial clouds and an expansive halo whose fine rays spread across the dark field. Nearly two meters long and supplied with its fitted box, the scroll holds a dramatic yet still presence.

The Piece

This vintage Japanese kakejiku depicts a seated Buddha rendered in luminous gold-toned linework against a deep black background. The serene figure sits among stylized celestial clouds beneath an expansive circular halo, with fine golden rays radiating outward across the dark field. The folds of the robes, facial features, clouds and halo emerge through light rather than conventional color, and the Buddha's calm expression and symmetrical radiance create a contemplative focal point.

The central artwork is mounted in the traditional hanging-scroll format, surrounded by warm bronze-gold textile decorated with repeating Buddhist-inspired motifs and framed by rich rust-red brocade that adds depth to the restrained palette, with hanging cords and a lower scroll rod. An inscription and two red seals appear at the lower left of the artwork, and a fitted storage box is included. The large vertical format suits a meditation room, Buddhist altar, study, tea room or Japanese-inspired interior.
