Sparrows cross a hinomaru setting sun on this blue and black souvenir jacket, a gentler subject than the tigers and dragons of the classic Yokosuka jumper. In Japanese art the sparrow is a familiar emblem of home, good fortune and everyday life.
The Piece
The sukajan, a contraction of Yokosuka jumper, began as embroidered souvenir jackets made in postwar Japan, pairing American bomber construction with Japanese needlework. Alongside dragons and tigers, birds and the red disc of the sun have long belonged to its vocabulary. This example, in blue and black, is embroidered with Japanese sparrows and a hinomaru sunset.
