Two dragons do not simply decorate this jacket; they take possession of it. Offered unused with its original hang tag, this SCRIPT Hanatabi Gakudan reversible sukajan sweeps immense coiling dragons from the chest across the shoulders and down both sleeves, over jewel-like cobalt-blue and champagne-gold satin.
The Piece
Most embroidered sukajan place a central motif on the back and smaller companions over the chest; this piece organizes the entire jacket around its dragons. Two gigantic dragons emerge from opposite sides of the front, their heads confronting each other across the upper chest with the metal zipper as the axis between them, while their scaled torsos coil outward over the raglan shoulders and descend nearly to the cuffs. Scales are individually articulated in dense embroidery, and darker outlining produces an almost ink-drawing quality against the reflective satin; from a distance the jacket reads as a powerful blue-and-gold composition, up close as a miniature textile landscape of scales, horns, whiskers, claws and swirling bodies. When the arms move, the dragons move with them, wrapping around the wearer rather than sitting flat on a single panel.
The sleeves are arguably the defining feature. Long scaled bodies twist almost the full length of both arms, interrupted by flashes of blue satin and black contouring, the champagne-gold satin acting like illuminated parchment beneath the darker scales; the garment has to function as a single composition across several moving fabric sections. On the blue back, a third, spiral dragon in layered charcoal, black, silver-grey, champagne and antique-gold threads folds around itself in an almost circular composition, head turned inward and tail curving downward, filling most of the panel with rotational energy. The restrained metallic-neutral palette emphasizes line, scale texture, movement and embroidery density, closer to traditional monochromatic Japanese dragon art than to the bright red-green-gold palette of many wagara jackets. Depending on the light the body reads deep royal blue, cobalt, petrol blue or almost indigo, while the sleeves shift toward pale champagne and antique gold.
Turned inside out, the jacket becomes a quiet, textured black jacquard, its subtle woven pattern visible across body and sleeves, with contrasting pockets and black and grey rib detailing, deliberately free of embroidery. Side A is blue and champagne-gold satin with monumental dragons; Side B a dark, understated jacquard: in effect two jackets in one garment. Two angled welt pockets with pale contrast trim sit low on the embroidered face, and the absence of bulky padding keeps the flowing sukajan silhouette rather than a heavy winter-bomber profile.
The dragon, ryū (龍), is associated in East Asian imagery with power, wisdom, water, rain, protection, authority, transformation and good fortune, and appears across Japanese temple art, painting, tattoo culture, festival imagery and decorative crafts; its serpentine body suits embroidery that moves across fabric. The sukajan itself emerged from postwar Yokosuka and the souvenir jackets of American servicemen, pairing varsity and bomber silhouettes with dragons, tigers, eagles, Mount Fuji, cherry blossoms, pagodas and maps of Japan, before Japanese designers turned it into a genre of wearable art. Hanatabi Gakudan is respected among collectors for dense needlework, dramatic traditional imagery (dragons, phoenixes, tigers, koi, skulls, flowers, mythological figures and ukiyo-e subjects) and embroidery that interacts with sleeves, shoulders and garment architecture; this example demonstrates that philosophy, crossing sukajan, wagara, dragon embroidery, Japanese tattoo aesthetics and wearable art. Despite its density the palette wears easily with raw indigo or black denim, wide Japanese jeans, a white T-shirt, black or engineer boots, minimal sneakers, workwear trousers or monochrome tailoring, the blue satin pairing especially well with faded denim; for display, the back dragon alone functions almost like a framed textile.
