The Piece

This Satori sukajan pairs a skeleton drawn from rockabilly and punk iconography with two of Japan’s most enduring motifs: sakura cherry blossoms and the great curling wave associated with Katsushika Hokusai’s ukiyo-e prints. The contrast between memento mori and seasonal beauty gives the embroidery its edge.

The souvenir jacket, or sukajan, began in postwar Yokosuka as an embroidered keepsake for American servicemen and was later absorbed into Japanese rock, biker and street fashion, a lineage this design wears openly.
