A circa-1946 Rolex Bubbleback Ref. 3065 with hooded lugs, one of the most visually distinctive early Oyster Perpetual configurations. Its 14K yellow gold case, ivory dial and chronometer-grade automatic movement make it a cornerstone of early-Rolex collecting, preserved here with exceptional structural integrity.
The Piece
The Bubbleback era is where Rolex became Rolex. Emerging in the 1930s and evolving through the mid-1940s, these early automatic Oyster Perpetual models established the foundations of the brand's technical identity: the sealed Oyster case, the thick domed back that accommodated the new perpetual rotor, and the chronometer-certified precision that defined a generation of Swiss watchmaking.
Among them, the Ref. 3065 'Hooded Lugs' is one of the most distinctive and most respected. Produced in limited quantities in the mid-1940s, it employed an integrated lug architecture rarely repeated in Rolex history, creating a seamless flow between bezel, mid-case and strap and a sculptural, almost architectural silhouette that has become iconic among early Oyster collectors.
This example is crafted in K14 yellow gold and measures 32mm × 32mm. The ivory dial has aged with a soft, natural patina and retains its original Arabic numerals and minute track, while blued-steel hands provide a subtle contrast that highlights the period-correct typography and balanced proportions.
Inside, the chronometer-grade automatic movement, overhauled by a technician, works beneath the signature domed back that houses the early perpetual rotor, the breakthrough that shaped Rolex's automatic line. Surviving examples in solid gold, with historically coherent dials and preserved structures, are treated by serious collectors as anchor pieces for Bubbleback sets and early-Oyster study.

Early Oyster Context
The 1930s and 1940s were Rolex's most pivotal decades, defined by the Oyster case, the perpetual rotor, chronometer testing and structural case experiments that shaped modern Rolex design. The Bubbleback era fuses technical ambition with sculptural refinement, and the Ref. 3065 stands among its most iconic executions, a bridge between early experimentation and the mature Oyster language that would dominate the 1950s and beyond.
