A silver Hannya emerges from a halo of rust-orange fire, framed by crossed katana, braided cords and ghostly peonies on black satin. Turned inside out, the darkness gives way to burgundy satin patterned with calligraphy-like characters and seals, giving the jacket two completely different lives.
The Piece
A striking souvenir-style bomber for collectors drawn to Hannya imagery, irezumi-inspired artwork, dramatic monochrome embroidery and reversible streetwear. The principal black side has a lustrous satin body with champagne-ivory sleeves and black shoulder stripes. At its center is a large horned Hannya mask embroidered in silver, charcoal and black thread; two crossed Japanese swords rise behind it, pale peony-like blossoms and braided ceremonial cords with tassels form an ornate symmetrical frame, and rust-orange flames surround the whole. The restrained palette gives the embroidery the look of engraved metal or monochrome tattoo flash, interrupted only by the burnt-orange fire.
The front mirrors the theme with two smaller Hannya masks surrounded by blossoms and flame details, and black-and-cream striped ribbing at the collar, cuffs and waistband completes the classic sukajan silhouette. The embroidery is concentrated across the back and chest of the black side; the reverse relies on woven surface pattern and contrasting color blocking.
In Noh, the Hannya represents a woman transformed by overwhelming jealousy, anguish and rage. The mask can look furious from one angle and sorrowful from another, embodying emotional contradiction rather than simple evil. With swords, flames and peonies, the imagery evokes confrontation, emotional transformation, mortality and strength under pressure, and the composition achieves something difficult: visually aggressive without becoming chaotic.
The reversible side pairs a jewel-toned burgundy body with pale champagne panels, covered in woven calligraphy-inspired characters, seals and ornamental markings in black, silver and pink, an almost brocade-like surface rather than a repeat of the figurative embroidery. Black for bold Hannya statement styling, burgundy for patterned Japanese maximalism: two complete palettes in one garment, at home in punk, rock, tattoo, streetwear and collector wardrobes, and in editorial photography and display.
Its materials, reversible construction, embroidery style and irezumi-influenced composition suggest a later Japanese sukajan revival piece, likely late twentieth to early twenty-first century, built on classic Yokosuka souvenir-jacket construction while embracing the more elaborate Hannya, tattoo and street-fashion imagery of later revival designs.
