Horned Hannya masks bloom through a garden of peonies and cherry blossoms on the crimson face of this reversible souvenir jacket, a short blade clenched between their teeth. Turned inside out, it becomes a restrained black satin bomber whose patterned sleeves flash with gold dragons and blossoms.
The Piece
In Noh theatre the Hannya mask represents a woman transformed into a wrathful demon through jealousy, resentment and emotional anguish, an image carrying both ferocity and sorrow rather than simple evil. Here the horned mask, with metallic-looking eyes and an intense expression, grips a short blade between its teeth while a braided cord loops beneath it, a composition closer to Japanese tattoo art and theatrical illustration than to conventional souvenir embroidery.
The principal side is a deep rose-red satin body with pale champagne sleeves. The back carries the largest composition, a horned Hannya face surrounded by peonies and scattered cherry blossoms, worked in black, white, gold, pink, blue and green thread for strong dimensional contrast. Two smaller Hannya masks face inward across the zipper on the chest, sakura continue over the chest, shoulders and sleeves, peony-like flowers appear in pink, blue, white and green, and braided cords and tassels add ceremonial movement. Striped red-and-cream rib-knit completes the bomber silhouette.
The reverse pairs a plain black satin body with richly patterned sleeves: gold dragon forms, pale cherry blossoms, sweeping purple and cream curves and black ornamental grounds with kimono- and brocade-inspired textures. It wears as an everyday black bomber, with flashes of maximal Japanese pattern at the arms. In changing light the satin shifts between deep burgundy, rose red, champagne and black.
The materials, embroidery density, reversible structure and tattoo-influenced imagery are consistent with a later vintage Japanese sukajan revival piece, likely produced in the late 20th or early 21st century: it preserves the visual language of classic Yokosuka souvenir jackets while embracing the more elaborate floral, tattoo and street-fashion aesthetic of later revival designs.
