Double-Sided Japanese Garden Bomber with Polychrome Butterflies, Kiku Chrysanthemums, Mint Satin Sleeves, and a Tonal Plum Reverse
A remarkable reversible sukajan built around two entirely different moods.
One side blooms in chocolate-brown and pale mint satin, covered with vivid butterflies and large pink-and-gold chrysanthemums. Turn it inside out and the jacket becomes a more mysterious plum-purple bomber embroidered with metallic cream, bronze, and smoky-gold butterflies and flowers.
The result is not simply a jacket with an alternate lining. It is two complete embroidered compositions sharing one silhouette: one exuberant and jewel-toned, the other quiet, nocturnal, and almost monochromatic.
Identification
Garment type: Reversible Japanese sukajan / embroidered souvenir bomber jacket
Tagged size: M
Style: Unisex Japanese streetwear and collectible embroidered outerwear
Primary motifs: Butterflies, chrysanthemums, leaves, and garden flowers
Construction: Double-sided satin-like shell, raglan sleeves, rib-knit trim, reversible zipper, and hand-warmer pockets
Colorways: Chocolate brown with mint green / smoky plum purple with metallic neutral embroidery
The maker’s label is not visible in the supplied photographs, allowing the embroidery and unusual reversible construction to become the jacket’s central identity.
Side One: Mint Green, Chocolate Brown, and Polychrome Garden Embroidery
The brighter side features a deep chocolate-brown central body framed by pale mint-green sleeves.
Large embroidered chrysanthemums rise across the chest and lower front in pink, coral, golden yellow, and leafy green. Butterflies appear throughout the body and sleeves in cobalt blue, red, orange, violet, cream, turquoise, and chartreuse.
The decoration continues across the back rather than ending at the front panels.
A sweeping floral arrangement occupies the upper-left back, while another chrysanthemum cluster grows upward from the lower-right corner. Butterflies cross the open brown field between them and continue along both sleeves, creating a sense of movement around the entire garment.
This side has the visual richness of an embroidered Japanese garden, but the mint-and-brown color architecture keeps it unusual and highly wearable.
Side Two: Smoky Plum and Antique Metallic Embroidery
The reverse offers a completely different atmosphere.
The satin becomes smoky plum-purple with dark charcoal ribbing. The embroidery is restrained to antique cream, taupe, bronze, muted gold, and charcoal, giving the jacket a softer, aged-metal appearance.
The front features a chrysanthemum arrangement on one chest with butterflies scattered across the opposite side and down both sleeves.
Across the back, several large butterflies hover over an extensive garden of chrysanthemum blooms rising from the hem. The reduced palette allows the embroidery’s shapes, wing patterns, and layered petals to become more prominent.
Where the mint side is bright and theatrical, the plum side feels elegant, shadowy, and quietly dramatic.
Butterfly and Chrysanthemum Composition
The jacket is unusually dense with embroidery, but the motifs are carefully distributed rather than packed into a single rectangular panel.
The butterflies vary in scale, wing shape, orientation, and coloring. Some appear fully opened, while others are angled as though moving through the floral field.
The chrysanthemums are rendered with long curling petals, rounded central disks, layered leaves, and multiple thread tones. Their large forms provide visual weight, while the smaller butterflies carry the eye across the sleeves and body.
Together, the motifs create a continuous garden narrative that changes completely when the jacket is reversed.
Craftsmanship and Construction
Notable features include:
- Fully reversible two-sided presentation
- Embroidery across both fronts, both backs, and both sets of sleeves
- Large multicolored chrysanthemum compositions
- Numerous individually embroidered butterflies
- Chocolate-brown and mint-green satin-like panels
- Smoky plum-purple reverse
- Raglan sleeve construction
- Rib-knit collar, cuffs, and waistband
- Mint and charcoal striped ribbing on the colorful side
- Dark charcoal ribbing on the plum side
- Central metal zipper
- Functional-style hand-warmer pockets on both presentations
- Lightweight souvenir-bomber silhouette
The jacket’s appeal lies in how thoroughly both sides have been designed. Neither face reads as a secondary lining. Each has its own embroidery palette, layout, character, and styling potential.
Period Assessment
The exact year of production is not documented.
Its reversible construction, extensive machine embroidery, satin-like surface, compact Japanese bomber silhouette, and highly decorative floral styling appear consistent with an older Japanese-market sukajan or revival-era souvenir jacket.
The softly aged finish and tonal variation give the garment genuine vintage character without obscuring the embroidery.
Condition
Pre-owned vintage condition with visible age-appropriate wear.
The satin-like fabric displays natural creasing, surface rubbing, tonal variation, light marks, and areas of softened sheen. The plum-purple side shows especially attractive mottling and patina that enhance its smoky coloration.
The embroidery remains strong and visually expressive. Individual threads may show minor age, irregularity, or light wear, particularly around heavily embroidered areas and sleeve motifs.
The rib-knit collar, cuffs, and waistband show normal signs of previous use. No major tears or severe structural damage are immediately apparent in the supplied photographs.
Please examine all images carefully, as they form an essential part of the condition description and show the garment’s texture, color variation, embroidery, and naturally aged satin surface.
Size and Fit
Tagged size: M
Japanese sukajan jackets often have a shorter, more compact bomber silhouette than contemporary Western outerwear.
This piece may best suit:
- A fitted modern men’s S to M
- A relaxed modern women’s M
- A more oversized women’s S
- Unisex styling depending on preferred fit
Please compare the garment with a similar jacket that fits comfortably. The tagged size should be used as a reference rather than the sole guide.
Why This Jacket Stands Out
Most reversible sukajan jackets pair a detailed embroidered exterior with a comparatively plain second face.
This example offers substantial embroidery on both sides.
The buyer receives:
- Two complete colorways
- Two distinct embroidered garden arrangements
- Butterfly embroidery across both sets of sleeves
- Large floral compositions on both backs
- A bright statement side and a subdued tonal side
- A wearable Japanese streetwear piece with strong display value
It is especially suited to collectors of sukajan, Japanese embroidered fashion, butterfly garments, botanical clothing, maximalist outerwear, and reversible vintage bombers.
Styling
Wear the mint-and-brown side with denim, cream trousers, wide-leg black pants, or earthy neutral layers.
The plum reverse pairs beautifully with charcoal, burgundy, black denim, long skirts, leather boots, and muted vintage garments.
Because the embroidery wraps around the sleeves and back, the jacket remains visually compelling from every angle. It can also be displayed on a padded hanger as a piece of textile art, with the opposite colorway periodically reversed for an entirely new presentation.
Shipping and Store Policies
This is a vintage or pre-owned garment offered in its present photographed condition.
All photographs should be reviewed carefully before purchase. Natural signs of age, handling, storage, and previous wear are part of the garment’s history and character.
Due to the individual nature of vintage clothing, all sales are final. Returns, exchanges, and condition-based claims are not accepted.
Worldwide shipping is available from Japan by tracked international service. The jacket will be carefully folded, protected, and packed for transit. Tracking information will be supplied after dispatch, normally within 3–5 business days.
